The idea of “Free Trade” can be difficult for students to grasp – it’s such a “way out there” idea that they may not think of much during their day to day lives. This game is very simple, but the concepts it reinforces are very important. It is designed to be used with a group of at least 8 or 10 students, and up to 30 or more. We spent about an hour when we played the game with my class of 24 students

The Grocery Game: Adding + Multiplying Money

If you're looking for an engaging way for students to practice adding and multiplying money, The Grocery Game is it. This is an interactive activity that will get students moving as they apply math skills. You will prepare signs and task cards included and place them around your classroom. There are 10 shopping lists to distribute, so only a couple of students are working on the same list. Students will shop around the classroom and make note of the prices of items on their shopping list. Then students will collect their workspace mat and begin computations to get their total. This Project: Compare 2 Dinosaurs of the Jurassic Period: Sauropods resource is designed for students to engage in research and compare and contrast two dinosaurs of the same period. This Entrepreneur Fair Mini Unit is completely ready-to-go for your intermediate or middle school classroom. It walks students through the entire process of starting a small business step-by-step. Use it over several weeks, culminating with an Entrepreneur Fair in your classroom where students can buy each other's products and services. This will be the kind of hands-on, applicable learning students don't soon forget! How to Use: Print a booklet (double-sided) for each student with pages 2-7. Print a single page 8 for each student. o What is an Entrepreneur?: Read through as a class and give students time to research entrepreneurs. Decide if students will work independently or in pairs or small groups. o Brainstorming a Product or Service: Support your students as they complete the mind-map to think of a product or service they could sell. Ask questions to get them thinking of ideas. Once they have decided, they complete the page to draw and describe their idea. o Costs to Start a Business: Model a sample product and its costs, then let your students complete this task for their business idea. The purpose of this 6-page lesson, Book Browse: Teach Your Students How to Choose a Book to Read is to teach students in grades 4 through 9 how to browse for a book to read. Many of our students are not sure how to choose a book to read. They might not have many books in their homes or they might not go to a library or bookstore. We have to teach our students how to browse a book to see if they might want to read it. I take my students to our school media center /library once every five or six weeks, and we always book browse. Sometimes we browse a specific genre, such as Historical Fiction or Narrative Nonfiction. Other times it might be Newbury Awards or bestsellers. Students enjoy this activity, and over time, they feel very comfortable browsing for books on their own.Every time we go to the library after this first time, students ask if we can do a book browse. Some teachers might think it’s a waste of a period, but I am an avid book browser at the library and in bookstores, and I have found many authors that I wouldn’t have if I hadn’t browsed. The structure that this lesson provides is very useful if you’re doing a genre study or a literature circle. But even if you just want your students to have a book of no particular genre, giving them choices within a somewhat limited framework (rather than having them wander among the shelves looking or pretending to look), helps them make informed choices and gives them some agency at the same time. This activity offers students the opportunity to find books they might enjoy. Although this lesson is specifically designed for a school library, if you have an extensive classroom library, you can easily book browse in your classroom.
