This is a Solving Equations Introduction Activity that your elementary students will love. The objective is for students to problem-solve to find the number of balls hidden inside boxes. This is an activity designed for 2nd – 4th grade students. It is a cooperative partner activity. Purpose of the lesson: --For students to try to solve equations (disguised so they don’t “look like” equations) by problem-solving. --For students to develop an intuitive process for solving an equation. --For students to see solving equations in a concrete, visual way (balls and boxes) before moving to the abstract (equations without context). The activity provides a low entry point so all students can engage and increase in rigor as the lesson progresses. As you work through each slide, you will be able to click "show solution" after time is up for students. Charlotte's Web Activity Compare Characters

In this activity, students practice the skill of comparing characters from the novel Charlotte's Web, by E.B. White. Graphic organizers can be a great way to help students organize their thoughts. The graphic organizer I chose for this activity is a Venn Diagram . Venn Diagrams are perfect for comparing and contrasting two things. There are several characters in Charlotte's Web that work well for this activity. I've created four worksheets where students will be comparing Charlotte and Wilbur, Charlotte and Fern, Wilbur and Templeton, and Templeton and Avery. This activity works well with second through fourth graders who have read the story. You could hand out the graphic organizers at the beginning of reading have students add to them as you read through the book. Or, you could wait until you've finished reading. Depending on the level of your students, you could have them list words to describe the characters on a sheet of paper. They could then use that when filling out these diagrams. A great extension to this activity would be if you want students to write a paragraph comparing the two characters. The graphic organizer would help them organize their thoughts into a good paragraph.

In this Smart Cookie game (2022 version), students try and race each other to be the first one to guess the answer based on one at a time clues after one at a time clicks via Presentation mode on Google Slides. This is based on the wildly popular game Smart A** but more applicable and relevant to elementary-high schoolers. I have included many references to popular t.v. shows and famous people the students born after 2001 would know. This is a trivial pursuit-like game but more fun and students feel more successful. It is just for fun and perfect for Zoom, an ice breaker or indoor recess but they might even learn something! There are 3 categories; Who Am I?, Where Am I?, and What Am I? There are 42 slides for each category. Use in Presentation mode for your class. There are answer sheets at the end for each card so the Game Leader can reference quickly and keep track of the cards used. This is in PowerPoint so the completed cards will turn black after being used for easy game play. In this new 2022 version there are all new cards for each category!
