The purpose of these resources is to explore patterns in our number system through one of the most fundamental classification of numbers - even and odd. Recognising even and odd numbers is first seen in Grade 2, and this builds on work covered here. See the resource Recognising even and odd numbers with and without objects. Having accomplished this, a natural extension is to investigate whether there are any patterns when even and odd numbers are added, subtracted, multiplied or divided. So, as well as looking for patterns pupils are practicing and applying the 4 basic number operations in a math investigation There are two fundamental approaches to this investigation: Using visual aids: Students can get visual clues when even and odd numbers of objects are displayed in an orderly fashion, which is always a good starting point. Addition and Subtraction are covered here with worksheets and digital teaching resources. Multiplication has a digital teaching resource. The range of numbers used are between 1 and 28 for addition, and 1 to 14 for division For the multiplication the examples go from 2 x 2 to 6 x 7 No visual aids: students apply the idea learnt in the Grade 2 resource that whatever the size of the number, in the end only the last (unit) digit matters when deciding if a number is even or odd. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are all covered here. The range of numbers used here are: - Addition: 2-digit plus a 2-digit number up a total of 30, 50 or 100 - Subtraction: Two 2-digit numbers with the first number a maximum of 30, 50 or 100 - Multiplication: From 2 x 2 to 12 x 12 - Division: Dividend a maximum of 100, Divisor up to 12. The work is broken down into modules so that a step by step approach can be taken. This prepares your students to: - Independently investigate and recognise any patterns or consistently repeated results when performing the 4 operations with even and odd numbers. - Make generalizations from the work carried out. - Make predictions and test them. For articulation groups or individual therapy. 1. Dice Word Drill Place a regular dice in your egg carton with your overlay affixed to the top. Have the student shake up the box and open it. Wherever the dice lands, the student must say the corresponding word however many times the dice says. For example, if the student shakes the box and the dice lands on five under the word “cheese,” the student must say the word “cheese” five times. •Student can use the Monitoring Card to check off the words they have already said and to rate their productions. •To use Sentence Strips with this activity , play as directed above except instead of saying the word only, they must say it in a sentence. 2. Word Match-Up Cut up the little “match-up” word squares and place one in your egg carton with the corresponding overlay affixed to the top. Have the student shake up the box and open it. The student is trying to make the little picture land in the space that matches with the same picture in the top overlay. If the little picture lands under a word that doesn’t match, the student must say that word and try again until they match. Once they get the right match, the student can use the Monitoring Card to check off the word. Repeat until all words have been matched. 3. Picture Search Cut up the little “match-up” word squares and place one in your egg carton with the corresponding overlay affixed to the top. Have the student shake up the box but do not open it. Use the sentence strips to guess where the picture will be. Have them ask, “Where is the ____?” “Is it under the ___?”. If they get it wrong, try again. If they guess right, use the sentence strip, “I found the ____!” ♥ I suggest printing on card stock and laminating. Use tape to affix overlay to egg carton. Sorts Included in this Literacy Resource Sort words that are included in the AG family from words that are not included in the AG family. Sort pictures that represents words in the AG family from pictures that represent words not in the AG family. Sort between real and nonsense AG words. The teacher can easily differentiate these sorting activities for students who need more or less support to be successful in completing these sorts. How to Use: The teacher can create a file folder sorting activity The teacher can add magnets to the picture pieces and create a cookie tray sorting activity The teacher can place the cards and mats in a box for a simple sorting activity To assemble file folder activities, position the two sorting mats on each side of a file folder.
