Here's a middle grades science project (for grades 4-7) that will let your students use their creativity to apply their knowledge of biomes and adaptations as they complete research, integrate knowledge from several sources, type a report, and make a detailed diagram ! How to Use: Assign each student an animal or let them chose their own. They need to research that animal’s biome and the adaptations the animal currently has. Next, each student chooses a different biome and moves their animal there. They must use their imagination and logic to predict the adaptations the animal would develop in the new biome. Once each student has completed their notes, they can type or write a report to present the information. I encouraged my students to make a four-paragraph report: Paragraph one: describe initial biome Paragraph two: describe initial adaptations Paragraph three: describe new biome Paragraph four: describe new adaptations Students also create their own visual image of their creative creature (labels encouraged). I like to put all the reports and images together into a class book. This is fun way to showcase the students’ hard work. I have included the title page I use for our class book. I have also included the rubric I use to assess the projects. Building Brick Creative Building Game (Lego Brick S.T.E.M. Game)

Overview of This Activity: This printable game is designed to encourage children to use their creativity and apply S.T.E.M. skills! During the game , players collect different Lego elements (pieces). At the end of the game , players create anything they can imagine with the pieces they collected during the game . Then, they can informally practice presentation skills as they tell each other about their creation. How to Play: Place a box or pile of Lego elements (different pieces) where all players can reach them. Gather a die and this game board. Each player should choose 1 mini-figure or Lego element to be their game piece Note: Players can use their piece in their creative build at the end of the game if they would like to! Directions: Players take turns rolling one die on their turn. They move the number of spaces represented on the die and follow instructions on the game square they land on. Based on where they land, they will either choose a set number of elements from the pile, return a set number of elements from their collection to the pile, or move backward a certain number of spaces. The game ends when one person reaches the finish. At that point, all players build creatively with the pieces they have collected during the game . Then, they share what they have built. What You Get: This is a set of Place Value Activity Sheets that was designed for 2nd grade students who are working on or have mastered place value with higher digit numbers. It may be a great fit for 3rd grade students who need additional practice. It also works well as a review for students. It is a 4-page printable. How To Implement This Resource: You can print off enough copies of this worksheet for each student to have. You may also choose to print only a few copies and laminate those. If you choose to laminate them, students can use dry erase markers to write answers. This is a great way to turn this into a math center or small group activity. The first two pages have tables for students to complete. Students will look at the number in the first column and use that number to complete the following two columns. All numbers are 2-digit or 3-digit numbers. The other 2 columns are: -- What do the digits mean? (6 TENS + 3 UNITS) -- Sum and Total (60 + 3 = 63) The last two pages will have 10 problems for students to complete. Each problem will have place value cards broken up into hundreds, tens, and units.
