Regents Global 9 CRQ: Governing Ancient Times + Video Lessons This product is a constructed-response question (“CRQ”) in the format of the new New York State Regents examination in Global History and Geography. The CRQ calls upon the student to examine historical sources (I use exclusively primary sources) by providing historical or geographic context, identifying the point of view, intended audience, or purpose of a document and then using the two documents in either compare-contrast, cause-effect analysis, or turning point identification. I advocate a strategy of assigning one CRQ in each unit of study in grades nine and ten without access to notes. I used this as one of the tests at the end of a unit of study. I would tell students about what kinds of documents would appear and what historical context they should be able to recall in advance. It is a challenging task for them. The first challenge for novices is to understand what it means to provide context. Faced with the question “What is the historical context of this document?”, beginners will retell what the document says. The reason for this mistake is that, since they were little kids, teachers have asked them to relate what a text means to prove they understood it. Animal Sort: Carnivore Herbivore Omnivore

Allow students to sort animals by what they eat. Students can sort by animal by whether they are carnivores, herbivores, or omnivores. What is Included: There are three sorting card headers for carnivores, herbivores, or omnivores. There are eight sorting mats for carnivores, herbivores, or omnivores. There are six picture cards for each of the three sets of sorting activities. Each sorting mat includes a real life example of an animal that belongs in that animal group. All of the picture cards also include real photographs of each animal. What Questions are Asked: To use these, students will lay out either the header cards or the sorting mats. They will then sort the animal images beneath or on top of the correct sorting mat. When to Use: Science Center - The sorting mats can be placed in a science center for students to learn about living things and what they eat. Morning Work - These animal sorts can allow teachers to create quick and easy morning activities for students while they wait on their classmates to arrive to class. Independent Practice - These animal sorts are great for students to independently work on living things. Emergency Sub Plans - The low prep nature and easy to set up activity , makes these worksheets a great activity to leave with subs to assign to students. Small Group Activity - These animal sorts can be used in small groups so teachers can target the students who need extra practice with living things. Writing Review Activity - These animal sorts work well as a review to reinforce student's learning of living things. These sorting activities are easy to create. The mats just need to be printed out. The picture cards need to be printed and cut apart. Once made, the sort can be used over and over.

US History Regents Short Essay "The Great War" + Video Lessons This product is a short essay task in the format of the new New York State Regents examination in US History and Government. It’s great to do one of these each unit, so I have organized them by time period. For additional resources in US and Global history, please visit my store here! Woodrow Wilson ran for president on an anti-war platform, reflecting the resistance of Americans to become involved in the war in Europe that would become the first world war. Always the scholar, he could not escape the conclusion that the United States must intervene in the war. Whether all of us today would agree with that conclusion is a matter of some debate. Wilson knew what he was getting into; knew how a war footing would change the nation. Document set 1: describe the historical context; identify and explain the relationship between the events and/or ideas found in those documents (Cause/Effect or Similarity/Difference or Turning Point). Document set 2: describe the historical context; analyze the reliability of one source. CRQ "OF POPES AND KINGS" & Video Lessons: Regents Global 9 This product is a constructed-response question (“CRQ”) in the format of the new New York State Regents examination in Global History and Geography. The CRQ calls upon the student to examine historical sources (I use exclusively primary sources) by providing historical or geographic context, identifying the point of view, intended audience, or purpose of a document and then using the two documents in either compare-contrast, cause-effect analysis, or turning point identification. I advocate a strategy of assigning one CRQ in each unit of study in grades nine and ten without access to notes. I used this as one of the tests at the end of a unit of study. I would tell students about what kinds of documents would appear and what historical context they should be able to recall in advance. It is a challenging task for them. The first challenge for novices is to understand what it means to provide context. Faced with the question “What is the historical context of this document?”, beginners will retell what the document says. The reason for this mistake is that, since they were little kids, teachers have asked them to relate what a text means to prove they understood it. The Self-Evaluation and Reflection Tool: Back-to-School Bellringers for Middle School English Language Arts is an ideal formative assessment to carry out with your students during the initial two weeks of school, while you're checking attendance. Each day, students are required to complete a brief survey consisting of 5-8 questions, followed by a daily self-reflection question, over eight days. For convenience, each page includes two identical surveys, facilitating easy duplication. The surveys in this Self-Evaluation and Reflection Tool: Back-to-School Bellringers cover a range of topics such as Time Management, Concentration and Memory, Note-taking, Test-taking, Attitude and Motivation, Active Reading, and Writing. The brief surveys included encourage students to reflect on their various habits, practices, and skills with first-person affirmations, like keeping track of tasks by noting them in a planner, studying in a distraction-free environment, annotating texts while reading, creating study aids like flashcards for tests, paying attention to their thoughts during reading, seeking help when needed, re-reading to comprehend their reading, and reviewing their writing for grammatical errors. They can respond with either Always, Usually, Sometimes, or Never. Each survey ends with a consistent self-reflection question: "Choose one statement from the survey where you did not mark 'Always' and reflect upon it. What could you change?" The surveys may be used as formative assessments to inform further instruction. They can also be used in interactive notebooks for students to compare beginning to end of the year responses and how they might have changed. This resource pairs nicely with my lesson plan: Academic Progress and Citizenship for Middle School Students: Goals and Reflections. In this lesson plan, students learn how to set attainable academic and citizenship goals for each grading period. At the end of the grading period, they reflect on their goals, their successes, their challenges, and what they did to overcome them. Then they repeat the process for each grading period. At the end of the year, they reflect on their experience with setting goals for the year.
