A Did You Know? fact tied to the topic (one per set) to add curiosity and cross-curricular value
Themes Included
The crosswords cover a wide variety of engaging, age-appropriate themes such as:
Seasons & Holidays (e.g., Winter, Easter, Valentineโs Day)
Math Concepts (e.g., Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division)
Everyday Topics (e.g., School, Colors, Animals, Weather)
Special Units (e.g., Health, Earth Day, Sports, Graduation, Kindness)
Each theme is carefully selected to reflect the experiences and interests of young learners, while reinforcing vocabulary and comprehension.

Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Name a fruit or vegetable from a short definition built on its colour, texture or use - carrot, apple, banana, orange, grapes, berry, lettuce, tomato
Spell each food word letter-perfectly to fit the crossword grid, with no word bank supplied
Distinguish a fruit from a vegetable in everyday terms, and meet the case where the everyday label and the botanical one disagree
Teaching tips
The sample is a single puzzle - useful for trying the format with a class before committing to the full six-set series
No word bank is printed, so young children may need the eight food words on the board first; older ones can work from the clues alone
The tomato fact is the natural discussion point: the puzzle's own answer treats tomato as a red fruit used in salads, while the Did You Know note explains the confusion directly
Solutions for the other five sets sit on the same page, so cover or trim that page before handing the sample out if you plan to use the full series later
Skills covered
Food vocabulary - eight everyday fruit and vegetable words are recovered from short definitions rather than from a list.
Defining by category and attribute - each clue names a category and a distinguishing feature, as in "a green leafy vegetable used in salads" or "small, round fruits that grow in bunches".
Spelling in a fixed frame - answers such as lettuce, banana and tomato must be spelled exactly to fit the grid squares.
Everyday science awareness - the accompanying fact introduces the difference between how a food is used and how it is classified.

Questions teachers ask about this resource
In Food Crossword: 1 Page Sample (PDF), what does the solutions page cover?
All six sets in the full Food series, not only the sample. It lists across and down answers for Fruits and Vegetables, Breakfast Foods, Sweet Treats, Drinks and Snacks, Foods Around the World and Healthy Foods - so the sample also previews the vocabulary the complete series works through.
Which words does the sample puzzle actually ask for?
Eight: berry, banana, apple, orange and lettuce going across, and carrot, grapes and tomato going down. All are everyday foods with straightforward spellings apart from lettuce.
In Food Crossword: 1 Page Sample (PDF), how are the clues written?
As short definitions built on a category plus one distinguishing feature - "A crunchy orange vegetable that rabbits eat", "A round fruit that is also a color", "Small, round fruits that grow in bunches". None names the food directly, so each has to be reasoned out.
