Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers Dice Game

This is a fun and easy game to add to your fractions unit to help students practice working with mixed numbers and improper fractions. Students must demonstrate knowledge of what makes an improper fraction, how to convert an improper fraction into a mixed number, and how to order and compare mixed numbers. I suggest using 10-sided dice (if possible) for a wider variety of outcomes. I encourage my students to use mini-whiteboards for recording their work and doing their calculations. Student Instructions: 1) You and your partner each roll the die two times so you each have two numbers. 2) Use your two numbers to make an IMPROPER FRACTION (which one should be the numerator?). 3) Write down your improper fraction and convert it to a mixed number. 4) Compare with your partner’s mixed number. Which number is bigger? You might have to find a common denominator if the whole numbers are the same. 5) The person with the larger number gets a point. Play until one person has five points. Grades to Use With: This is a simple game that can be an addition to a lesson or fraction review in grades 3-7 when students are working with fractions that have a value greater than one. Two ways to do this is by incorporating topics they are interested in and by providing them with hands-on activities. This is a Matching Objects to Shapes Activity that is great for your 1st and 2nd grade students. You can use this to introduce shapes or review it for students who have already mastered shape identification. It is a 5-page printable. You may choose to print copies of each page for every student to complete as a cut and paste activity . It may also be good to print a few copies and laminate them for repeated use. If you choose to laminate them, you can attach Velcro dots to the cut-outs so students can match them up. On the first three pages, you have 3 shapes per each page. You have three printing options. - Colour – for if you printed either of the colour game boards - BW 1 – for if you printed the BW 1 game board - BW 2 – for if you printed the BW 2 game board Cut out and laminate the fish at the top of the page to use as playing pieces. If you are using the BW printed fish, you would need to colour them before laminating. Alternatively, you can simply use counters or buttons.
