In this SEL Boom Deck, students will learn about flower (healthy), weed (bothersome) and cactus (unhealthy) friendship behaviors. It is important for students to learn some of the behaviors that are bothersome and frustrating and to learn that they do need to address these sooner rather than later. Just like a weed ignored or not wanting to be dealt with, it can get worse and impact the friendship in a negative way. Some examples of flower (healthy) behaviors are; letting your friends have other friends, being there to help, standing up for them (being an upstander), and many more. Some of the weed (bothersome) examples are; bragging, copying a friend, not paying a friend back for borrowing money, and more. Some examples of cactus (unhealthy) behaviors are; being mad if something good happens to a friend, putting a friend down, gossiping, not letting a friend join their other friends, and many more. There are 24 task playing cards and 5 instructional cards so this can be played as a whole classroom lesson, a small group lesson, with partners or assigned to individuals to do as homework. There is a handout that matches the concepts for students to fill out to remember the different friendship behaviors and a question about what they can do if there friend is exhibiting either a weed or cactus type friendship behavior. This is a Boom Deck that is great for 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, and sixth grade. If there are strong readers or the classroom teacher or school counselor can read each slide, this could be something 2nd grader also do. Middle School Math Stations or Centers: Adding and Subtracting Integers

Math stations are a great way to get students engaged as they move about the room and work collaboratively with their peers. But they are a lot of work to prepare! This ready-to-go set of 5 stations will supplement a unit about adding and subtracting integers. Ways to Use: You can break your class into 5 groups and have them rotate one at a time through the centres, giving them 10-20 minutes at each one. Or, start students at certain centres and then allow them to move around at their own pace as long as no one centre gets too full. I find these are a great resource as you are finishing your unit and preparing for the unit test. Station 1: Students solve four realistic word problems using integers. (optional: set out white boards for students to use) Station 2: Students play a dice game to practice adding and subtracting integers. (supplies needed: 2 dice per pair- they must be different in some way so one can be + and one can be -) Station 3: Students compare temperatures in two cities (in degrees Celsius) and create a number line. Online game extension. (supplies needed: laptop or tablet) Station 4: Students use integers to decide if a football team would score a touchdown based on 8 plays. Station 5: Students do an integer drill and explain their thinking about integers in words. Grades to Use With: These stations will work well in grades 4-7 or high school special education classrooms. Standards: CCSS6.NS.C.5 Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values (e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, credits/debits, positive/negative electric charge); use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world contexts, explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation. Ecological Succession – Lab Station Activity

This fully editable Lab Station on Ecological Succession is meant to get your students out of their seats and engaged in the content. Each station not only offers a unique opportunity to test your students' knowledge (offer an opinion, answer questions based on a video or reading, draw, etc.), but also provides a fantastic learning opportunity where your kids are learning through assessment. Each station comes with a description card while some also contain more detailed instructions, a reading, questions to answer, etc. Students are equipped with a recording sheet (passport) to write their answers. There is almost no prep for you. Simply print the cards, lay them out around the room and you're all set. An answer key is also provided where applicable. This lab activity covers: - Primary Succession - Secondary Succession - The Role of Forest Fires in an Ecosystem - Pond Succession ---------------------------------------------- Bonus Activities: To ensure your students don’t have any downtime between stations, your lab also includes a 10-word word scramble and word search, both with an answer key. In this SEL Boom Cards resource, students will learn the difference between gossiping and venting. There are 24 task playing cards and 6 other cards that are explanation/introductory cards. This can be used as a whole class social emotional learning lesson where each student comes up to the interactive whiteboard and takes a turn guessing which one is the scenario. You can also assign this individually or as a group/partner resource. This is an appropriate topic for upper elementary and middle school students.
