Animal Farm (1999) - Russian Revolution Study: Complete Movie Guide
Social Studies, History, History: Europe, History: World, Grade 8, 9, 10, 11, Activities
The 1999 movie adaptation of George Orwell's classic novel "Animal Farm" follows a group of farm animals who overthrow their human owner and establish their own society based on the principles of equality and freedom. The animals, led by the pigs Snowball and Napoleon, work hard to build their new community, which they call Animal Farm. Initially, the animals enjoy a period of prosperity and growth, but as time passes, the pigs begin to take more and more power for themselves. Napoleon, in particular, becomes increasingly authoritarian and manipulative, using fear and propaganda to maintain his hold on the other animals. The film highlights the corruption and hypocrisy of the ruling class, as the pigs become indistinguishable from their human oppressors, and the other animals suffer under their increasingly oppressive rule. The film's climax depicts a violent uprising as the animals attempt to overthrow the pig regime and reclaim their freedom. Overall, the movie adaptation of "Animal Farm" stays true to the themes and message of Orwell's original novel, offering a powerful critique of authoritarianism and the dangers of unchecked power.Additionally, this video guide also helps students understand the characters in the animal farm and their allegorical equivalents (Old Major = Karl Marx, etc.). This movie guide comes with an answer key and a student printable version. Ready to print and ready to use! New prep! Enjoy! Topics explored in this movie: Russian Revolution, Communism, government, Stalin, Oligarchy, allegory You can watch the video here: Animal Farm (1999) Thumbnail clipart: Prince Padania

Guided Reading Level L - Firefighters Keep Us Safe (with Lesson Plan)
ELA, Resources for Teachers, Reading Comprehension, Reading, Pre-Reading, Language Development, Science, Engineering, Technology, Vocabulary, Grade 1, 2, 3, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Teacher Tools, Centers, Activities, Literacy Readers, Quizzes, Quizzes and Tests, Assessments
This Guided Reading Book - Firefighters Keep Us Safe (Level L) with lesson plan includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. DOWNLOAD THE CATALOG TO VIEW ALL GUIDED READING BOOKS AVAILABLE (SORTED LEVELS A-Z) Pre-Reading Question (x1) Teacher asks the prompt aloud, can be while showing the cover or first page. Students share what they already know, or make educated guesses from the cover. Prompt them to use the target vocabulary. Write some of their responses on the board to look back at during the reading. Vocabulary Words (x5) Introduce the five words, best doing it one at a time. Start by saying it, while students repeat and then see if anyone knows what it means before reading further. Read through the meaning and try to briefly connect each word to a picture or gesture so it’s meaningful. Ask students to flip through the book pages and point to where they see each of the vocabulary words. While reading the book pause upon coming across one of the vocab words or read the sentence twice to make sure students understand the word has appeared. Optional: Ask students to raise hands whenever they see/hear one of the new words. Guided Reading Pages (x10) Check the book snapshot (below) for: primary topic - do you need to prep extra reading or intro materials on this? what is taught best - decide on 1-2 bullets to focus on, use the prompt or words provided here for best results. learning goals - what you are checking for students to be able to do after the session, elicit answers using prompts or words provided. key vocabulary (see section above). questions overview - so you know what is coming up and if you need to prep extra materials to assist understanding. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level. Comprehension Questions (back cover x3) This is your way to check that students didn’t just say the words, but actually understood the text. First, let students answer by pointing to the page/picture and saying a short sentence. After any answer, follow with: “Show me where you found that in the text.” In bigger groups, have partners answer first (10–20 seconds), then call on 2–3 students to share. Differentiation tips: Emerging speakers/struggling readers: oral + pointing On-level: oral in a full sentence Higher: one written sentence or draw + label Book Snapshot Title: Firefighters Keep Us Safe Genre: Nonfiction (informational) Subject: Social Studies (Community Helpers) / Health & Safety / Reading Primary Topic: Firefighters, tools, and how they keep people safe Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): L What This Book Teaches Best How firefighters are community helpers who work at a fire station and respond to an emergency call. Why firefighters wear turnout gear and how it protects them from heat and smoke (layers resist flames and keep them cool). What a fire engine carries and how sirens and flashing lights help firefighters reach emergencies quickly (drivers move to the side). How key equipment works: hoses connect to a hydrant , nozzles change the water spray, and long ladders help with rescue and spraying from above. Firefighters’ jobs go beyond fires: they help in car accidents and medical emergencies , and training and dedication help keep the community safe. Learning Goals Students will explain how firefighters help keep a community safe using details from the text. Students will describe what turnout gear is and why firefighters wear it. Students will identify what a fire engine carries and how sirens and flashing lights help on the road. Students will describe how hoses, hydrants, and nozzles help firefighters spray water on a fire. Students will explain why firefighters use masks and air tanks in smoky buildings. Students will describe why firefighters train daily and how dedication connects to safety. Key Vocabulary From the Text community — people who live and work in the same place. emergency — a sudden problem that needs help right away. protective — made to help keep someone safe from harm. hydrant — a street pipe where firefighters can get water. dedication — working hard and not giving up. Discussion Prompts Pre-reading question: What do you think firefighters need to do their jobs safely? Comprehension questions: What is turnout gear, and how does it help firefighters around heat and smoke? What do the sirens and flashing lights on a fire engine tell other drivers to do? Why do firefighters wear a special mask and an air tank in a smoky building? Printing Tips 1. Best Printing Method (Recommended) “Booklet” Printing (Best if Available) If your printer or PDF viewer supports Booklet Printing , use this. Settings to use: Print mode: Booklet Paper size: Letter or A4 (either works) Orientation: Landscape Print on both sides: Yes Flip on: Short edge Scaling: Fit to printable area Booklet subset: First test: Front sides only Then: Back sides only This will automatically: Pair pages correctly Put the cover on the outside Align everything for folding After printing, fold in half and staple along the spine . 2. If “Booklet” Printing Is NOT Available You can still print this correctly with manual duplex printing . Step-by-step: Open the PDF. Choose Print . Set: Orientation: Landscape Pages per sheet: 1 Print on both sides: Yes Flip on: Short edge Print all pages . Because each PDF page already contains two facing book pages, the result will still fold cleanly into a book. Thousands of Cored Education products are included with your TeachSimple membership. Sight Word Cookie Jar
ELA, Language Development, Phonics, Spelling, Kindergarten, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, 3, Activities
This interactive literacy resource leverages a beloved dessert theme to creatively strengthen sight word recognition using hands-on matching games and customizable storage centered around a vibrant printable cookie jar. The materials transform solitary flashcard drills into engaging opportunities to showcase growing fluency. Over 200 Dolch sight words are featured, strategically organized by difficulty level for optimal sequencing. To utilize, educators print jar and cookie templates then guide students matching terms to corresponding sweet treat illustrations. This scaffolds mastery through multimodal appeal, allowing young learners to trace vocabulary visually and physically before verbally reading items aloud. The durable, foldable jar functions as personalized storage allowing progress visibility over time as the container fills. Teachers might permit students to “buy” letter cookies after demonstrating automaticity reading target words. This incentivizes effort while transforming instruction into festive “cookie baking” for added engagement. Extensions allow advanced groups to sort cookies by syllables or manipulate terms into alphabetical order to link literacy with phonics or organization. Rather than rote flashcard drills, this vocabulary matching system spurs participation through playful analogies and vibrant visual cues designed to resonate with children. Phenomena like selective attention, encoding variability, context dependence and multi-sensory immersion catalyze efficient mastery. Students gain confidence recognizing essential lexical building blocks through repetitive exchanges in compelling format. This teacher-friendly resource has flexibility for collaborative group games at literacy centers or independent matching tasks at student desks. Young learners across ability levels will relish polishing sight word fluency while developing mastery at their own pace by “feasting” on engaging cookie templates pairing oral, visual and kinetic memory strategies.
