Financial Literacy: Vacation Math Project: Budgeting, Percentages, Time Zones, and More!
Life Studies, Math, Time, Decimals, Money, Measurements, Finance, Home Economics, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Activities, Projects

This Financial Literacy: Vacation Math Project will get students excited about using math in everyday life to plan something fun: a vacation! They will plan a personal vacation including a flight, hotel, transportation, food, attractions, shopping and insurance. You can assign students different budgets, start dates, and durations to differentiate, or give everyone the same constraints. Students will have to practice making trade-offs to stick to their budget. Six problem solving questions involving time zones suitcase weight, taxes & fees, timeline, and travel speed are also included. Student Instructions: First, choose your destination: _______________________ How far from your hometown is it? ____________________ How many time zones away from you is it? _________________ Now, research all of the costs involved in your vacation. Make sure to be specific and include all of the taxes and fees in each category too. Grades to Use With: This project is great for the middle grades (5-8) when students are learning about decimal operations, percentages, time zones, and basic speed calculations ( unit rate). It could also work well in a high school special education classroom. Standards: CCSS5.NBT.B.7 Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. CCSS6.RP.A.3c Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent. CCSS6.RP.A.3d Use ratio reasoning to convert measurement units; manipulate and transform units appropriately when multiplying or dividing quantities. CCSSMP4 Model with mathematics. Mathematically proficient students can apply the mathematics they know to solve problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace. In early grades, this might be as simple as writing an addition equation to describe a situation. In middle grades, a student might apply proportional reasoning to plan a school event or analyze a problem in the community. Bingo Games #2: 7th Grade Math Review

Bingo Games #2: 7th Grade Math Review
, Grade 7, Activities, Games

This is a PowerPoint Presentation with 2 bingo games for 7th grade math review. Threre are two bingo games with 8 questions each. Topics covered are: probability, similar triangles, predictions from graphs, multi-step word problems, proportional word problems, distributive property with fractions and decimals, box and whisker plots, percents of rations, mean for a set of data, word problems with negative numbers, order of operations with fractions and decimals Directions for BINGO. Have students to make a 4 x 4 game board. They will fill in the answers in random order. This way everyone has a different board but all of the answers. Put up the first 2 questions. When all students finish #1, you can change to the second page, which still has #2 but also #3 for those that have also finished #2. This allows some students to work ahead when ready. When everyone has finished #2, move to the next screen, which has #3 and #4 as some students will be ready for #4. Continue in this way. Students should put a mark in the corner of the square for answers---Don’t have them completely mark out their answers in the first game because they will use this same board in the second game. Students MUST show their work on paper to get credit for a BINGO. For the problems that don’t have work to show, they must explain their answer on paper. The first game uses questions #1-8. In a regular size class there should be 5-6 bingos after this many questions. You can start the second game #9-10 or save that for another class time. Just make sure students save their board because both games use the same board. I like to give a piece of candy (like jolly rancher) for BINGOs. I always help students with their problems since I used BINGO as practice not as an assessment.

SEL Boom Deck-Grateful or Disappointed? With Audio Plus Handout!

SEL Boom Deck-Grateful or Disappointed? With Audio Plus Handout!
Special Resources, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Social Skills, Special Education Needs (SEN), Elementary, Middle School, Activities, Worksheets & Printables

In this resource, students will learn the differences between feeling grateful and disappointed. These two feelings are essentially opposite one another. The 28 slide Boom Deck has 3 educational/introduction cards and 25 task playing cards. There is audio on each card so no reading is required. This can be done as a whole class group whereas each student can take a turn coming up to a interactive board and deciding which situation is being presented. Then the directions for the deck ask students to think of things the person in the situation could be grateful for in a disappointing situation. There are many examples of disappointing situations such as; not being able to play a volleyball game because a coach is out of town, not being able to have outdoor recess, a volcano not erupting, having to do homework instead of play with friends, a dog ruining a pair of shoes, a teacher asking a student to rewrite a paragraph, a special art class is being canceled, and not getting to go on a roller coaster at an amusement park, among others. There is a handout to print off for each student and have them reflect on a time they were disappointed and now looking back, what were they grateful for in that situation. This is a great Boom Deck to do during Thanksgiving but also throughout the entire year. This is great for grades two, three, four, five, and six. This will create some good conversations with students on looking for those grateful moments. Please review the Boom Deck terms of use and the ability to get a free trial. The explanation is on their website and I cannot insert it here due to the AI system recognizing it as duplicate information.
