Unions, strikes, negotiations, and the like can cause big ripples in communities across the country. This engaging case study places students at the heart of a contentious union negotiation-- with the threat of a garbage collectors strike right around the corner! The simulation takes place in the city of Cleantopia. The Waste Pros Union, representing the city's garbage collectors, are entering negotiations with the City Sanitation Department for a new contract. The current fleet of garbage trucks is aging, and many lack functioning air conditioning, leading to safety concerns and worker discomfort, as well. At the forefront of the negotiations is pay, though. Since their last contract, inflation has risen dramatically. As a result, workers feel very underpaid compared to their counterparts in other cities. In this activity , student groups (Union management, workers, and city sanitation department) will negotiate with each other and fight the clock for an agreeable contract. The groups will debate on the following fronts: Pay: Workers want a 15% raise; the city offers 3% Working Conditions: Workers demand modernized trucks with functioning air conditioning Overtime: Union wants time-and-a-half for overtime; city wants to maintain current flat rate Paternity Leave: Workers request 8 weeks of paid paternity leave; city currently offers 2 weeks What will they settle on? Will the union call for a strike? Will the city look to replace its workers? What will the public think? Questions like these and more will help learning come to life with this simulation. AGE Words Fluency Practice

Kindergartners and first graders will get a ton of practice reading AGE words with these fluency activities. All target words follow the magic e or silent e phonics rule. Students wil practice reading these CVCe words in isolation as well as in context of a simple sentence or passage. What is Included: Word Fluency Strips - These three strips only contain AGE words in isolation. Students will practice reading the words on the strips until words are mastered. Sentence Strips - The sentence strips contain AGE words in the context of simple sentences. Sentence Fluency Worksheet - Students will read the simple sentences then pick one sentence to illustrate in the box at the bottom of the worksheet. Reading Comprehension Passage - Students will read the story containing AGE words three times then answer two comprehension questions and draw a picture to illustrate the story. Sentence Pyramids - There are eight sentence pyramids where students will read each sentence, adding a new word on each line. How to Use: These activities word very well in a reading or phonics center for students to work on independently or with a partner. They make great small group activities. Teachers can pull aside small groups of students who need extra practice reading AGE words with fluency. The sentence fluency worksheets and reading comprehension page can be utilized as homework to send home for students to complete. Skills Assessed: These fluency worksheets and activities assess students' ability to read AGE words in isolation or in the context of sentences. Students will practice reading comprehension skills with the reading passage page. The worksheets are print and go, no prep activity for teachers to prepare for students. They just need to be printed out and given to students to complete. The sentence strips and pyramid cards need to be printed and cut apart. These low prep cards can also be laminated for durability if desired.

A fun game to help your students learn and memorize the types and kinds of shells in the ocean. A perfect way to review and enjoy your Ocean Unit Study or study of shells. How to Use This Resource: Cut apart all the cards. Then lightly glue each back to a front. Run through a laminator and then cut apart each pieces. Lay pieces flat and upside down. Take turns with your students to turn over 2 at a time. When you find a match, you get to keep the match. When all the cards have been turned over and matched up, then the game is over. The winner is the one who has found the most matches. Not only do these cards feature seashell pictures, but they also have the corresponding word printed underneath each picture. They will get to work their brains to try and remember where they saw a certain image, but they will also be able to retrieve where they saw a certain word.
