"The Pilgrims and the Mayflower Compact" - A History Play and Activity

This play is a fun and engaging way to introduce the importance of the Mayflower Compact. The play focuses on the Mayflower being off course, the unrest between the passengers, and the resulting decision to stay in the Cape Cod area and write a new agreement, the Mayflower Compact. The follow up activity works well with continuing the lesson by learning what the Mayflower Compact actually says. It is a great way to incorporate the use of a primary source document into the lesson. Students put the words of the pilgrims into language they understand. It is a neat activity that I have used over and over.

The Pilgrims and the Plymouth Settlement, Readers Theater

Here is a play to help deliver any lesson about the Pilgrims and their settlement in the Plymouth colony. I have enjoyed using this as a resource in my classroom for years.. Here is what is included in the play. It explains why the Pilgrims were in Holland, why they came to North America, events on board ship, and what happened after they arrived. Students like to be active in the classroom. This is an activity to get them up and moving! There are a number of roles for students. The voyage on the Mayflower seems fascinating to us but in reality it had to be very scary and very boring! However, there were some interesting events to take place on the voyage over. The play does identify why the people we call "Pilgrims" today were in Holland and why they felt the need to leave. Most of the major events on the voyage are covered in the play and even some of what the Pilgrims experienced in what we now call the state of Massachusetts. This works well as an engaging acivity for students. Overall, this takes about 15-20 minutes to complete and your students will love it! This is an Art History Research Project designed for your middle school and high school art students. The Learning Goals for this project are as follows: Students will research an art period with an emphasis on the artists, achievements and art styles of the selected period. Students will interpret and analyze a variety of works from their chosen art period. Students will create and design a Slide Deck that utilizes their research. Students will utilize the elements of art and design in the composition of their Slide Deck . Overview to present to students: For this project, you will be selecting and researching an art time period or movement of your choice. The periods range from Ancient to Modern (options are on the next slide). You can select a time period that most interests you. You will be researching this period or movement, the achievements of this time, famous and iconic artists during this time and more. You will then use your notes to create a Slides presentation with all of this information. This project is broken down into 4 phases. Phase 1 – Choose a time period or movement. Ancient World, European Art and Modern Art are the time periods included. Phase 2 – Complete the research for their time period or art movement. Phase 3 – Interpret and analyze at least 3 works from your time period or movement. Phase 4 – Create a Google Slides , Prezi, or any other form of visual to present your information. This Google Slides presentation is fully editable, so it allows the teacher to edit any information they need to, such as due dates. For each phase, the slides have place for students to type in their answers, responses, and research.

This Guided Reading Book - The Secret Life of Hamsters (Level K) with lesson plan includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. DOWNLOAD THE CATALOG TO VIEW ALL GUIDED READING BOOKS AVAILABLE (SORTED LEVELS A-Z) Pre-Reading Question (x1) Teacher asks the prompt aloud, can be while showing the cover or first page. Students share what they already know, or make educated guesses from the cover. Prompt them to use the target vocabulary. Write some of their responses on the board to look back at during the reading. Vocabulary Words (x5) Introduce the five words, best doing it one at a time. Start by saying it, while students repeat and then see if anyone knows what it means before reading further. Read through the meaning and try to briefly connect each word to a picture or gesture so it’s meaningful. Ask students to flip through the book pages and point to where they see each of the vocabulary words. While reading the book pause upon coming across one of the vocab words or read the sentence twice to make sure students understand the word has appeared. Optional: Ask students to raise hands whenever they see/hear one of the new words. Guided Reading Pages (x10) Check the book snapshot (below) for: primary topic - do you need to prep extra reading or intro materials on this? what is taught best - decide on 1-2 bullets to focus on, use the prompt or words provided here for best results. learning goals - what you are checking for students to be able to do after the session, elicit answers using prompts or words provided. key vocabulary (see section above). questions overview - so you know what is coming up and if you need to prep extra materials to assist understanding. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level. Comprehension Questions (back cover x3) This is your way to check that students didn’t just say the words, but actually understood the text. First, let students answer by pointing to the page/picture and saying a short sentence. After any answer, follow with: “Show me where you found that in the text.” In bigger groups, have partners answer first (10–20 seconds), then call on 2–3 students to share. This resource is an ABC Spelling, Writing and Matching Activity. It is a great printable for your preschool and kindergarten students. You may also find it helpful for your 1st grade students who need additional support. There are 7 pages included in this resource. To complete pages 1-5, students will need to cut out the letters on page 7. Page 7 consists of all 26 letters of the alphabet. These are all uppercase letters. Students will cut these out first. Then they will match the uppercase letter to the correct lowercase letter. Each time they match a letter, they should trace and say the corresponding word. If you want to make this a reusable activity, you can print and laminate the pages. You could adhere Velcro dots to the letter pieces and pages 1-5, so students can attach the uppercase letters to the correct lowercase letters. They could use a dry erase marker to trace the words. This will build their fine motor skills as they practice grip with other writing tools, besides a pencil. When you transform it into a reusable activity with laminated pages, it easily becomes a center activity or an early finishers activity. Page 6 will be a page in which they can trace the letters of the alphabet all at once, capital letters and lowercase letters. This could also be printed and laminated as well to create a reusable activity. Students will practice reading, writing, spelling and tracing all in one resource. Each of these can be used for centers, small groups or even placed in a substitute folder.
