This is an easy and fun activity to give students who need practice with recognizing the letter B sound from amongst other letter sounds or for those students who need extra practice distinguishing between the initial sounds in words. To complete this sorting activity , students will look at a picture on a bear to determine if the picture begins with the letter B or does not begin with the letter B, and then the students will place the bear on the correct cave mat. Perimeter of Regular and Irregular Polygons: Math Game Here’s a fun math game that incorporates critical thinking and math strategy. It could be a great addition to your geometry or measurement unit in grades 4-6. Students will practice drawing regular and irregular polygons with given perimeters. They will need to use math skills including addition, division, or knowledge of factors to determine how to make a specific kind of shape with a provided perimeter. This game is ready-to-go! Simply show the two sample rounds to your students to teach them how to play. Then each student needs a six-sided die and the three-page game. Students can play on their own or in small groups where they can share ideas. There are three rounds to play! A question to help students notice the strategy of the game is included. Students should notice that it is easier to make a regular shape if the perimeter is divisible by the number of sides of the shape. For example, to make a regular pentagon with the digits 5 and 1, I would make the perimeter 15 units, so each side could be 3 units long. A bonus question for early finishers is also included. ANSWER: A decagon has 10 sides. So, a regular decagon could easily have a perimeter of 10, 20, 30, 40 units. That could be hard in this game because the die does not have a zero. Grades to Use With: This game is designed for students in grades 4-6 who are learning about perimeter of polygons, regular vs irregular polygons, factors, and division. It's also a great way to practice critical thinking and strategy. Letter recognition sorting mats. Beginning Letter Sound Recognition. ABC Mats Beginning Sounds Cut and Paste Worksheets This resource can be used in two ways. You can print on color paper, laminate and use as sorting mats. Add velcro to the pieces to make it more fun and easier to use. Add a dry erase marker for the letter tracing activity. You can also use this same resource as worksheets. Kids will cut and paste the pieces to be sorted, then trace the letters and color the pictures. I use them in both was. We use the laminated mats in class as literacy centers or small group activity. And I send the same pages as homework or kids use it as extra practice in class. I like that kids find it comforting to use the same activity in a different version as it is already familiar but also new in a way. It is especially beneficial with kids needing more practice with their letter recognition. If you like this resource you may find other ABC resources in my store useful. Here's a ready-to-print set of 5 math stations that can supplement a middle grads math unit about area, perimeter, and volume of right-angled shapes. Math centers or stations are a wonderful way to get your students engaged in what they learn as they move around the classroom and work cooperatively with their classmates. Even when your students are in the intermediate or middle school grades, they can benefit from a wide variety of teaching techniques including the implementation of stations or learning centres! But creating these stations takes a lot of time, so let me do it for you! Station 1: This stations gives students four word problems to sovle that all involve geometry skills about area, perimeter, and volume. Station 2: This station gives students hand-on practice as they measure the volume of a real cardboard box. You will need to provide a few boxes and rulers for your students. Station 3: This station lets students design a backyard with different zones of grass, cement, a pool and more. They calculate the area and cost of each zone. Station 4: This station lets students practice calculating area and perimeter of complex shapes and they can try an online game! Station 5: This station lets students apply their knowledge to a real world math problem, and they practice carefully explaining their mathematical thinking in pictures and words. Break your students into 5 groups and have them rotate through the centers in 15 minute increments. Allow students to start at one station and move to another at their own pace as long as no station gets too crowded. Assign only one or two stations that work best for your students. Give a station as a quick review or homework assignment. Grades to Use With: These stations work well in grades 4-7 classes or high school special education. Your students will “visit” four different cities: Sydney, St. Petersburg, London and San Francisco. In order to travel from one city to another, they will have to solve expressions with order of operations. There are 40 expressions: 10 without parentheses and 30 with parentheses, no exponent. Take your Pre-K and kindergarten learners on a journey through the Amazon rainforest with this fun-filled set of activities. There’s something for all types of learners as they focus on colors and animal adaptations in the rainforest biome. They’ll begin their journey with an engaging mini-book that tells about 10 rainforest animals. Created with beginning readers in mind, the story offers repetitive sentences, sight words, and colorful graphics. On each page learners will also be introduced to adjectives describing adaptations of each animal. Afterwards, each learner will have the opportunity to personalize their own book. This is a great way for them to build connections with learning and practice their reading skills with family and friends. Next, they’ll move on to several hands-on activities where they will strengthen foundational fine motor skills through tracing, cutting, gluing, manipulating modeling dough, and pretending to feed a baby hummingbird using a pipette. Along with those skills, your learners will practice concepts such as counting, writing, identifying color words, sorting, patterns, and following directions. Each activity was designed to meet current educational standards while highlighting the unique characteristics of animals such as the pink river dolphin, harpy eagle, black caiman, leaf-cutter ant, and red-eyed tree frog. You will note the STEM activities require specific materials, many of which can be found in your own teacher treasure trove or borrowed from teacher friends. While the craftivities do require initial prep work, they will add color to your educational environment. What’s more, your learners will take pride in seeing their masterpieces displayed during your rainforest themed unit. The books and many of the activities are available in both color and black & white versions. An answer key is also provided for worksheets. Below you will find a list of details found within the pages of this product. BOOKS: Two versions of “Take a Look!” – one a basic read-along, the other an interactive read-along. STEM: Activity 1: learners will estimate the number of blue morpho butterfly eggs that will fit on various sized leaves and place eggs (pony beads) on said leaves to show visual representation. Activity 2: learners will use modeling clay to build an anthill to house an estimated number of leaf-cutter ants that will fit inside their home. Activity 3: learners will use a pipette to feed the baby hummingbird an estimated number of nectar (colored water) droplets. Activity 4: learners will use Zoobs (anacondas) to create various types of lines and 2-D shapes.
