Do you remember the shock you felt when you discovered that some of your favorite “healthy” foods weren’t as healthy as they were advertised to be?!? How old were you when you discovered that harsh reality? Are you still unveiling incorrectly advertised foods now? What if we taught students about this false advertising before adulthood? This task, amongst other activities, sets out to do just that. This is a Healthy Eating Culminating Task: Expectations vs. Reality for students to complete. The objective of this task is to debunk healthy food advertising through research and then creating a presentation. This is a resource that can be incorporated into a social studies unit or a health course for high school students. It is a 28-slide PowerPoint. It will begin with students watching a KFC commercial and then discussing the problems with commercials, such as this one. There will be a variety of advertisements for students to view and discuss from a range of fast-food places. The PowerPoint will move to discussing and providing examples for 5 different advertising techniques. Students will be taught about the 3 persuasive techniques that are using in advertising. I find when I teach rounding that a few students understand the concept right away. Several don't. The ones who don't, usually need a visual. This worksheet has students look at two number lines. One is looking at rounding to the nearest 10. The other is looking at rounding to the nearest 100. Having this visual, and having students underline, circle, and color which numbers round up or down, will help your struggling students. This beginning sound sort for the letter A is a great hands on activity for recognizing the beginning sounds of the letter A. This is an easy and fun activity to give students who need practice with recognizing the letter A sound in both its long and short form or for those students who need extra practice distinguishing between the initial sounds in words. To complete this sorting activity , students will look at an item an astronaut is holding to determine if the picture begins with the long or short sound of A and then the students will place the astronaut on the correct scene. This sorting activity includes 3 pages that contains * One space mat for pictures that begin with the long A sound * One space mat for pictures that begin with the short A sound * Pictures that begin with the short A sound: alligator, ambulance, ant, apple * Pictures that begin with the long A sound: acorn, apron, angel, alien, anchor (depending on regional dialect) This beginning sound sort can be used in the following ways * Literacy centers * Fine motor centers * File folder activity * Add magnets to the apples for a baking tray activity * Small group activities * Morning work * Emergency sub plans Skills assessed with these letter A initial sound sort * Initial Sounds of the letter A * Distinguishing between words that begin the long A and short A sounds * Ability to sort the astronauts on to the correct mat This beginning sounds sorting activity is a low prep activity . Shapes Assessment

An important part of instruction are the assessments that follow! This is especially important for our younger elementary students. They are entering school with many different skill sets. It is beneficial for us to find out what they know, so we can properly serve them moving forward. This is why formative assessments are so important. We administer formative assessments at the start of the year, the middle of the school year, and at the end of the school year. This is a 2-page Shapes Assessment that can be printed or accessed digitally. This is a quick formative assessment for primaries to keep track of whether or not they can, not only identify each shape, but describe them as well. It includes a page for flat shapes and another for solids. There are 6 flat shapes and 4 solid shapes. You can print a copy of the pages for each student that you have to assess. Allow students to look at a shape one at a time and name the shape. If they name it correctly, you can check off the box. Then allow students to describe the shape. This will include how many sides and angles or if the shape is round. If they can describe it, you can check that box off. This is a great resource to guide your instruction as well as place in their data folders for future reference. I hope you enjoy!
