Social Studies, History, History: USA, Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, Teacher Tools, Assessments

Civic Literacy Essay for Week 20, Regents US History Unequal Power Relationships: finding a place for marginalized groups in society This Civic Literacy essay is based on a set of primary source documents. The question is designed to test a student's ability to work with historical documents. In analyzing the documents, students consider the source of each document and any point of view that may be presented. The language and images used in a document may reflect the historical context of the time in which it was created. A recommended teaching practice for New York State Regents US History and Government is to train students to write one of these each ten weeks or so through the year. Teachers preparing students for the New York State Regents will find it difficult to train students to write these well if they wait until the end of the year! Each of the civic literacy essays authored by Innovation Assessments LLC are designed for different points in the year such that documents come from historical context usually under study. Here is a blog article about teaching document-based essays that will be helpful. Historical Context of this essay prompt: Throughout United States history, many constitutional and civic issues have been debated by Americans. These debates have resulted in efforts by individuals, groups, and governments to address these issues. These efforts have achieved varying degrees of success. Marginalized populations are groups and communities that experience discrimination and exclusion (social, political and economic) because of unequal power relationships across economic, political, social and cultural dimensions. The product also includes passcodes to my own virtual classroom at Innovation. Give students the passcodes for access to review videos with embedded, auto-corrected questions. Assessments: Teachers
Resources for Teachers, Not Grade Specific, Teacher Tools, Assessments

Assessments : Teachers Boost your personal growth as an educator with this unique teaching resource, the ' Assessments : Teachers'. This tool is not grade-specific, making it versatile and suitable for various educational settings. It's designed to leverage the perspective of the most crucial individuals in your classroom - your students. This user-friendly tool breaks down into a ten question survey, providing insight into a teacher's effectiveness throughout a course. The beauty of this innovative system is its focus on simple communication. It has been tailored to give students a straightforward way of giving their feedback whilst ensuring teachers gain essential insights they can act upon. The areas in which feedback can be given range from communication and content quality to teaching methods and the entire course organization. It also covers questions about the teacher's knowledge regarding curriculum matters, possible perceived biases. Notably includes options for open-ended comments, where learners may express their critiques or compliments more freely. Students are given freedom to rate each focal point on a scale from 1-5; thus allowing educators to clearly identify areas that could use improvement while celebrating their strengths with quantifiable statistics. This invaluable data then serves simultaneous roles as both personal reflective material and tangible evidence during administrative evaluations if need be. FLEXIBILITY: Educators can choose how best they wish it implemented—conducting surveys as whole class activities for immediate collective insight. Conduct smaller focus groups for detailed feedback analysis. [2] Use these surveys as prompted homework assignments to provide good practice for students' constructive criticism skills beyond school work. To summarize, ' Assessments : Teachers' is essentially an instrumental aid in shaping superior-quality teaching methodologies by bridging gaps between educators' perception of their performance and actual sentiments felt by the learner body through unbiased student evaluations.

US History Regents Short Essay "Constitutional Foundation 5" + Video
Social Studies, History, History: USA, Grade 11, Teacher Tools, Assessments

US History Regents Short Essay "Constitutional Foundation 5" + Video Lessons This product is a short essay task in the format of the new New York State Regents examination in US History and Government. The updated New York State Regents examination in United States History and Government, part II, is a short essay task designed to measure students’ ability to work with historic documents. It is a mature version of the “CRQ” found on the tenth grade Global Regents. Students are called upon to understand text, engage it with historical context, and assess a text’s reliability. In document set 1, students describe the historical context surrounding two documents and identify and explain the relationship between the events and/or ideas found in those documents (Cause/Effect or Similarity/Difference or Turning Point). Document set 2 asks students to describe the historical context surrounding two documents and (for one identified document) analyze and explain how audience, or purpose, or bias, or point of view affects the document’s use as a reliable source of evidence. [ Read more about teaching this at the Innovation blog ] If you are afraid to assign your students this as a test because they are not likely to do well at first and don’t want to bother their GPA, I recommend using standardized scoring. You can use the z-score calculator here at Innovation Assessments . Use 78 as your standard mean and 14.8 as your standardized standard deviation. Read more about standardized scoring here and where I got those figures. The beauty of this system is you can apply this to their grades every month and as the class improves, as the class average approaches the standardized mean (78 in this case), then the algorithm affects their scores less and less. "Industrialization 5" Video Lessons: US History Regents Short Essay As the progressive era unfolded in the US, it looked like the nation was on its way toward resolving the severe problems of industrialization. The nation strove in some ways to become more egalitarian and more democratic. Some progressives fought on the moral front, addressing alcohol abuse and child neglect. If you are afraid to assign your students this as a test because they are not likely to do well at first and don’t want to bother their GPA, I recommend using standardized scoring. You can use the z-score calculator here at Innovation Assessments.
