This product covers the 2016 Virginia (VA) Standards of Learning (SOL) 3.2 The student will a) name and write fractions and mixed numbers represented by a model; b) represent fractions and mixed numbers with models and symbols; and c) compare fractions having like and unlike denominators, using words and symbols (>, <, =, or ≠), with models. (note that this will also work for the 2023 VA SOL 3.NS.3 The student will use mathematical reasoning and justification to represent and compare fractions (proper and improper) and mixed numbers with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10), including those in context.) It contains notes pages on identifying what a fraction is, identifying fractions, parts of a whole and set, number line fractions, mixed numbers, improper fractions, comparing fractions, equivalent fractions, and unit fractions. There are practice pages for each topic, with an answer key included. The notes pages come in two sizes. The first size is a full-page size. You can print them as-is, or you can print them two to a pages. This is what I do as it saves on paper and the sheets will fit in a notebook. The second size is formatted to fit on a standard composition notebook page. Additionally, there are two links included in the pdf: one which opens a digital version of the notes, and another that opens a slide show version, optimized for a projector or interactive board. This lesson carefully walks students through a comprehensive and visual explanation of multiplication of two binomials using an area model before introducing the mnemonic FOIL. How many times have your students memorized FOIL, but had no idea why it works or what they even doing when using it? This lesson can address that gap. It walks students through an area model without variables first before introducing variables and combining like terms. A sheet of practice problems of increasing levels of difficulty is included for students to reinforce what they have learned. Lesson for Adding and Subtracting Fractions Using Equivalent Fractions

This is a ready to use lesson for adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. This lesson is based on 5th grade skills and is a 35 slide PowerPoint . The lesson shows students how to use equivalent fractions and also uses circle fractions to model the concept. The lesson begins with students practicing finding equivalent fractions and then builds on this skill to incorporate addition of fractions. Circle fraction models are used to illustrate why fractions without a common denominator can't be added until a common denominator is used. Several examples are given and the procedure for finding a common denominator with equivalent fractions is show step by step. Students are then asked to try one on their own. Next students are show 2 examples of the same procedure except for subtraction of fractions. Students are then asked to try 2 on their own. Students are given a final problem that can be used as an exit ticket . The last slide has a summary of the lesson. Slides with answers to all practice problems are include throughtout the lesson. This lesson aligns with the Common Core Standard 5.NF.A.1 except mixed numbers are not inlcuded. This lesson is for conceptual understanding of the skill.

This is a 15-minute video for students to learn, practice and review this skill. --A Guided Notes printable . You should print this off for students to fill out while listening to the video lecture. Being able to take notes along the way will help students solidify their learning. It is 2 pages. --A Laws of Exponent Summary Sheet. This is a 1-page printable that can serve as a quick visual reference for what students have learned in this lesson. This lesson is designed for high school math students.
