Force and Motion Science Experiment

We all know that science is learned best with our hands! When we have the opportunity to really explore scientific concepts with an interactive approach, the learning just sticks! More than that, students love the chance to do experiments . This is a Force and Motion Science Experiment for your students to take part in. It may be used best with 3rd – 5th grade students. Students will work with a set of balls to apply what they know about force and motion. Students will complete the 2 page printable along the way. They will begin by making a hypothesis, as scientists do, before engaging in the experiment. Students will hypothesize which ball they believe will need the most wind-force for motion and which ball will need the least wind-force. You may choose to have your students decide on this hypothesis individually or in small groups. When students have wrapped up their hypothesis, they will move forward into the experiment portion. Students will follow the directions on page 1 to test out the force and motion of each ball. There is space for them to test out 6 balls. Your class may love completing this in small groups or with a partner. On page 2, they will reflect on the experiment by writing their particular outcome and formulating a conclusion about the wind-force needed to put balls in motion. I hope you enjoy! Fast Fact Squares: A strategic game of math facts! Be the player with the most squares at the end of the game by adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing. This game is great for a variety of ages, whether they are just learning their addition facts (adding 1 through 6), are practicing all of their addition, subtraction, multiplication and/or division facts, for those who know all of their facts but are practicing their fluency...or for those who just like strategy games! This game is great to incorporate into your math lesson or throughout the day as a fast finisher activity. Students and teachers alike will also love it as an indoor recess game . Students may not even realize they are practicing their facts or how much strategy is really involved! Materials Needed: • Game Board •2 dice •Pen or pencil Object of the Game : •To be the player with the most colored squares How to Play: Decide which player goes first by rolling the dice. The person with the highest roll goes first First player rolls both dice. They may either add, subtract, multiply or divide the dice. Player finds their answer on the game board and draws ONE line by connecting any two dots that surround that number. Next player’s turn Play continues back and forth When a player connects two dots that closes off a square, they color in the square and earn a point. This player gets to roll again! Once game board has all squares colored in, player with the most points wins! Examples •Player rolls a ”6” and a “2” •Connect dots that surround a “4” (6 – 2 = 4) •Connect dots that surround a ”12” (6 x 2 = 12) •Connect dots that surround a “3” (6 ➗ 2 = 3) •Connect dots that surround an “8” (6 + 2 = 8) Challenge •Another option for keeping score is that each player earns the points that they square off. •For example, if a player squares off a “12” square, that player earns 12 points. •This adds in more strategy for squaring off higher numbers as well as additional practice for adding!

Riddle Me This Place Value Activity

Riddle Me This is an engaging math activity for your 2nd and 3rd grade students to review place value. If you’re looking for an outside-the-box way to work on (or review) place value with your students, you’ve come to the right place! In this packet you will find 15 clue cards: ten are on a third-grade level, five are a bit more challenging, and one is a blank card for students to use to create their own place value riddle. Students will read the clues to help them solve the riddle of “Which number are we looking for?” There is a work-mat for students to use to write down digits as they solve the riddles and a line for their answers. These cards may be used as a daily self-starter/morning work activity , one larger math activity to complete in one or two days, or as center/daily five activities. They can be used for individual problem solving, group problem solving, or whole class problem solving. After the kids have had experience with the clue cards, they can create their own place value clue card on the blank template. It’s fun to let students solve each other’s riddles if there’s time. Otherwise, it’s a good indicator of whether there is understanding or not. Tips It can be a lot of paper to copy the cards for everyone. You can save paper, time, and energy by doing stations. Copy each clue card on cardstock (laminate if you’d like or have access to a laminator) and place one at each station. Once students have had time to solve a riddle, they’ll rotate to the next clue card. The work-mats are numbered so it will still be easy to check as a whole class. Another idea would be to copy the cards 4 to a page by going to print, clicking on full page slides, and choosing either four slides vertical or four slides horizontal. This would make for smaller copies and less paper!
