Differentiated Book Report: 4 Different Levels for All of your Learners in Grades 1-5

This book report package includes four book reports with different levels of complexity. They can be used after reading a class novel, or for when students finish reading their own personal books. How to Use: You can start with one level early in the school year and progress to a more challenging version in another term as your students' writing abilities develop. Or, you can differentiate for your students’ current ability levels. Some students might need a simpler version while others are ready for a challenge. Topics covered include: plot summary, setting, characters, genre, making connections, providing a review, and making recommendations All versions also include space for students to draw a scene or the cover of the book. I love to display a class set of these on a bulletin board outside the room or in the library so students in other divisions can see the recommendations of what my students are reading! Grades to Use With: Since there are four levels, these book reports can easily work for students in grades 1-5. They can help address the following standards across several grades; CCSSRL.1.7 Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events. CCSSRL.2.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. CCSSRF.3.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. CCSSRF.4.4a Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding. This product is perfect for 3rd grade math standards review. It's a worksheet where students review place and value of a digit in a number, as well as rounding to the nearest 10 and 100. While it was created for the 3rd grade standard of writing, 3.NBT.1, it would be a great review for 4th graders before you begin greater rounding of numbers. I find when I teach rounding that a few students understand the concept right away. Several don't. The ones who don't, usually need a visual. This worksheet has students look at two number lines. One is looking at rounding to the nearest 10. The other is looking at rounding to the nearest 100. Having this visual, and having students underline, circle, and color which numbers round up or down, will help your struggling students. Since this is just one worksheet, it would be perfect for review, or even an assessment. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student.
