Here's a great science mini-unit for the start of the year to help your middle school or intermediate students learn about the scientific method, design, and independent variables in a fun and hands-on way! This is also a great project to complete before a science fair unit! How to Use: Print a booklet (double-sided) for each student with pages 2-9. Print a single page 10 for each student. o Types of Variables: Read through as a class, give students time to identify the mistake, and teach students the three types of variables. o Designing Experiments : Students can work in pairs or small groups to think of how they would design experiments for the following situations. Come back together and share as a class, then ensure students complete the bottom section on their own to assess comprehension. o Paper Helicopter STEM Activity: Carefully go through the instructions. Choose a date in a couple of weeks for Registration Day (students will need at least 3 hours of class time to test models). The class after that can be Finals Day. Next, students use their single sheet (p. 10) to make the initial design and test it several times to see how long it takes to fall. o Helicopter Logbook: Students make at least three new designs. Each time they should only change one variable from the previous design. So, they could first change the wing length. After that, they could change the type of paper, and finally, they could change the size of the model, etc. Each time they explain, predict, make the model, observe 3 trials, and reflect. o Registration Day: Once students have tested at least 3 designs and have their best one, they make a fresh template of that design to hand in. Finals Day: Students have 10 minutes to create their final helicopter from their template. Everyone tests three times, and the class winner can be determined! [Note: The best design usually ends up being a simple, tiny square of paper!] o Reflection: Students complete the three questions and put all their pages together to be marked out of 50.

Math Journal: Experimental Probability with Two Independent Events This resource serves as a helpful teaching tool for educators focusing on the concepts of experimental probability and theoretical probability of two independent events in middle school mathematics. It offers an engaging math journal entry exercise that allows students to explain their mathematical thinking in pictures, numbers, diagrams, and words. How to Use: Students are given the following question: You have a six-sided die and a penny. If you roll the die twice and flip the penny twice, which is more likely: to get two sixes on the die or two heads from the penny? Explain your thinking using pictures, numbers, and words. Can you figure out the percentage chance of each event happening? Give students dice, coins, and mini whiteboards to work with so they can start to test out their ideas and theories. Encourage students to tackle the penny first as there are fewer results when flipping two coins. Suggest that students work together in pairs or small groups and use a table or chart to record the experimental options that could occur. You may want to start by teaching a mini-lesson about the probability of two independent events: that one multiplies the probability of each event to determine the probability of BOTH events. Grades to Use With This resource is ideal for use with students in grades 5-9 but can also be used as special education material or enrichment content for gifted children aged between grades 4-6. This downloadable PDF educational activity can help learners develop their sorting and classification skills. In this activity , learners are presented with a set of picture cards that have different pictures that vary in shape, size, color, and other features, and are asked to sort them based on specific criteria. For example, learners may be asked to sort a set of cards based on their function. This could include things we drink, things we ride in. Another way to approach this exercise is by sorting based on their features. For instance, learners may be given a card "Things with fur" and "Things with wings" then given a set of 12 individual cards 6 cards with pictures of things with fur and another 6 cards with pictures of things that have wings. This helps learners develop their ability to observe and categorize objects based on their physical characteristics. In addition to sorting by features and function, learners may also be asked to sort by classification. Overall, the "Sorting by Feature, Function and Classification" exercise is an engaging and effective way to help learners develop their critical thinking skills, classification abilities, and attention to detail. By practicing this exercise, learners can enhance their ability to analyze information and make informed decisions, which can be beneficial in many different contexts, from academics to everyday life.
