Sharecropping Activity – Post-Civil War US History

Sharecropping is an agricultural system that emerged after the American Civil War in the late 19th century. It was prevalent in the southern United States, particularly in the rural areas where the plantation system had previously dominated. Under sharecropping, landowners would allow farmers, typically former slaves or poor white farmers, to work their land in exchange for a share of the crops produced. The landowner would provide the necessary land, seeds, tools, and sometimes even housing for the sharecroppers. At the end of the harvest, the crops would be divided between the landowner and the sharecropper, with the sharecropper receiving a portion, usually around half, of the crop. Sharecropping was essentially a form of agricultural labor contract. However, it often led to a cycle of poverty and debt for sharecroppers. Since they did not own the land they cultivated, they had limited control over their own economic destiny. They often had to borrow money or supplies from the landowner, creating a system of indebtedness that was difficult to escape. Furthermore, the sharecroppers had little say in the choice of crops or the marketing of their harvest. Landowners would often dictate the type of crops to be grown, which were usually cash crops such as cotton or tobacco. The sharecroppers' lack of control over their economic circumstances and the volatile nature of agricultural markets made it challenging for them to break free from poverty. This historical simulation provides students with a deep understanding behind the system of sharecropping. The main idea behind this simulation is to show students how skewed the relationship between the sharecropper and landowner was after the Civil War. Students will gain an insight into the way sharecroppers paid for debts, and how many of them were forced to work in order to pay off those debts

In this activity, students practice the skill of comparing characters from the novel Charlotte's Web, by E.B. White. Graphic organizers can be a great way to help students organize their thoughts. The graphic organizer I chose for this activity is a Venn Diagram . Venn Diagrams are perfect for comparing and contrasting two things. There are several characters in Charlotte's Web that work well for this activity. I've created four worksheets where students will be comparing Charlotte and Wilbur, Charlotte and Fern, Wilbur and Templeton, and Templeton and Avery. This activity works well with second through fourth graders who have read the story. You could hand out the graphic organizers at the beginning of reading have students add to them as you read through the book. Or, you could wait until you've finished reading. Depending on the level of your students, you could have them list words to describe the characters on a sheet of paper. They could then use that when filling out these diagrams. A great extension to this activity would be if you want students to write a paragraph comparing the two characters. The graphic organizer would help them organize their thoughts into a good paragraph.

Here is a set of PE Basketball Stations. The PE basketball Stations are 20 fun filled, “fast break” basketball themed station signs/cards that you can use in your school gymnasium , outdoor blacktop or could be modified to be performed in a smaller space such as a classroom or empty cafeteria. Each basketball station card provides a basketball-related skill (i.e. dribbling, passing, shooting, etc.) and includes a brief instructional direction and a graphic that depicts the activity . The activities are standards-based and there are plenty of activities for you to choose from or for the students to take part in during multiple class periods or recess times if necessary. The stations work great as an activity for the weeks leading up to March Madness or the NBA Playoffs.

Match animals in an array of four is an educational activity that involves visual discrimination and matching skills. The activity aims to improve the learner's ability to identify identical objects in a group of different objects. To start with, the learner will be presented with an array of four animals, one of which will be an identical animal for example a horse. The other three animals will be different from the horse and will be easy to distinguish. The learner's task will be to identify and select the horse that is an exact match to the one presented. As the learner gets better at identifying identical objects, you can make the activity more challenging. In a more advanced stage of the activity, the learner will be presented with an array of four horses, but only one of them will be an exact match to the one presented. The other horses will have subtle differences, such as different colors, patterns, or sizes, making it harder for the learner to find the exact match. This activity is beneficial for developing the learner's visual discrimination skills, attention to detail, and cognitive flexibility. It can also help improve their memory, concentration, and problem-solving abilities. By providing a fun and engaging way to learn, the activity can motivate the learner to explore and discover more about the world around them. This activity is easy to create and assemble.
