Recycling Workshop Home-School Connection

Have you been learning about the 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle? Now that your 2nd, 3rd, or 4th grade students know what it means to recycle, it's time to put that concept into action. Students will find an object at home that would otherwise be trash and recycle it into something wonderful! Once they've completed their projects at home, they will bring them to school and get going on the second part of the workshop, which is a how-to writing outlining the steps they took to recycle their objects. Students will introduce their projects, discuss transition words, draw pictures of each step, and write a final draft. As a conclusion to the workshop, students will show their completed objects to the class and share their completed how-to writings with their classmates. The ultimate objectives are to put recycling into action, write a clear how-to essay so others can do the same at home, and share those essays with others. It's been a crowd favorite for three years running! In this product you will find a letter to send home to parents and students outlining the at-home expectations for the project, an outline for a rough draft of the how-to writing with a section dedicated to possible transition words for each step of their project, and a page for students to write a final draft. Book Jacket Book Report

This is an engaging Book Jacket Book Report for your middle school students! This book report can be genre-specific or it can be assigned to any book your students might choose to read. (For example, if you assign a genre-specific book, such as mystery or fantasy, this book report lends itself. But if you allow kids to choose any genre they are interested in, this book report works for that as well.) You can use the Book Jacket Book Report as a summative assessment after you’ve taught students about character, the elements of fiction, and how to write a summary and a short book review. I give my students 4-5 weeks to complete the project. Included in this packet are the following: --objectives and learning targets that are aligned with the Common Core Standards --detailed lesson plans --clear student-friendly directions --templates --an opportunity for students to reflect on their project and what they have learned about themselves as readers and as creators of the project --a grading sheet for teachers. Although you could easily modify this project digitally, students enjoy reading each other's book jackets (which is part of the lesson plan), and they make a great bulletin board. Through this engaging Career Exploration Project students will explore jobs in different sectors including: healthcare, education, tourism, business, medicine, and more! This project is unique as it encourages students to think creatively and research less common options for careers, instead of only the stereotypes we always talk about. So, instead of doctor in the healthcare field, what about a phlebotomist, a heart valve specialist, or a paediatric nurse? Instead of a president in the field of government, what about a speech writer, a social media expert, or a municipal clerk? There are so many varied jobs out there- and many of them students don't even know exist. Each student will be assigned one career sector. You can pick yourself, or let your students choose what they are most interested in. They will think of three of the common stereotypical jobs in that sector. Then, they will do research to discover four more unique or less common options. For each new career they think of, they must find out the education required to get that job the skills needed before you can be hired the daily activities that you will do the pay range At the end, students can pick their favourite option from the four new careers they have researched and present what they have discovered to the class. Grades to Use With: This project is great to use with high school students (in grades 8-12) in regular or special education classes. It would work well for a career and personal planning course!
