If you're searching for a novel approach to teach your middle schoolers about ancient history, the Become a Sumerian Brick Builder will surely captivate them. This resource provides a hands-on STEM activity that is engaging, stimulating, and enjoyable. Explaining to my 6th grade students that the Sumerians were pioneers in brick building made little sense to them until they experienced it firsthand. They were tasked with creating their own mud bricks just as the ancient Sumerians did, and this tangible exercise enabled them to appreciate the intricate challenges these early brick builders faced. They delighted in bringing their homemade bricks to class and collaboratively constructing a Ziggurat. Their most favorite part, unsurprisingly, was the demolition of their creation. Rather than merely giving lectures, assigning textbook readings, and having students answer questions — which can be dull and off-putting — this activity stimulates active learning. The project incorporates a written assignment that students complete independently, which can be utilized for both History and English Language Arts grading. We are all aware that many students forget learned material shortly after they've been tested on it. This interactive project, however, is bound to leave a lasting impression, instilling knowledge they will carry with them long after they leave your class. Experts in the field underscore the benefits of project-based learning (PBL), stating that it is an effective and enjoyable way to acquire important skills needed for school and life success. While traditional education can often be viewed as dull and irrelevant, PBL engages students, making them active learners. Standards like Common Core stress the real-world application of knowledge and skills to enhance problem-solving capabilities. PBL not only deepens students' understanding of the content but also aids in longer retention compared to conventional teaching methods. Additionally, working in collaboration with others fosters character development. ⎈ I REMEMBER sitting in history class, as a student, and being bored out of my mind. The teacher just lectured and all I could do was look at the clock and wish that I was someplace else, ANYPLACE else! Needless to say I learned very little that year. I only began liking ancient history after Ibecamea 6th grade teacher, years later, and vowed that I would make it come alive for my children. I didn't want them to go through what I did. Arctic Survival – Team Building Activity

Without a doubt, history is a topic that can be easily overlooked by our students. Sometimes, it can be difficult for them to make connections with the past in a way that makes sense to them. Being able to provide students with meaningful resources is the best way to get over this learning curve. Whenever you have a social studies topic to introduce or review, you want to find engaging products that you know your students will be able to learn from. Within my store, you will find a plethora of social studies resources to utilize with your students. What You Get: This is an Artic Survival Team Building Activity. There are 13 slides in the presentation . There is a Survival Score Sheet as well as an Answer Key + Teacher Guide. All 3 products are editable and can be accessed digitally. How To Implement This Resource: This is a team building activity that will have students ponder what kind of process makes for “good decision making.” Students will begin by being presented with the following scenario: “Your plane has crash landed in Northern Canada at night. The crash has killed the pilot and co-pilot. You and the others have discovered 12 items in the wreckage. You will be asked to rank the importance of these 12 items to your survival. Then, your group and you will rank them together.” As the teacher, you can decide on how large or small you want the groups to be. When all students have finished their individual ranking, allow them to come together with their group and propose new rankings. This will require students to talk to one another and listen to other reasonings. When students have finished their group rankings, they will have the opportunity to reflect with 4 questions. Students may find that humans make better decisions when they are able to consider diverse experiences. The Answer Key provides a ranking and rationale that was composed by former instructor in survival training. Students will be able to use this answer key to notate the Expert Score on their Survival Score Sheet. I hope you enjoy!

Book into Movie Project: Compare and Contrast Book Report and Essay

Many students don’t realize that some or many of the movies that they love were first books. They are often surprised to find out that the movie came second or that there's even a book the movie is based on. In the 47-page Common Core standards-aligned resource, Book into Movie Project: Compare and Contrast Book Report, and Essay students in 6th-9th grade will read a book, watch the movie that is based on or adapted from the book, and then write a book review in which they take a stand on which is better and why. The comprehensive lesson plan and guide provides teachers with everything they need to give 6th through 12th grade students the tools to critically analyze the similarities and differences between the two, including helping them to support their claim with evidence and analysis. Because the project offers many handouts, a sample student essay to analyze, and a writing template, your diverse student population of English Language Learners and Resource Students can be as successful as your regular ed and GATE students. After completing this project, many students will realize that although they liked the movie, they preferred the book for a variety of reasons, including visualizing the characters and settings themselves and explaining why that made the book better. They will notice that they didn’t like how the movie adaptors changed aspects of the plots or characters, and they offer an analysis of these omissions and their impact on the storyline. They will react positively when the movie includes something they really liked or when what they visualized matches up with the adaptation. Some will prefer the movie over the book, and they will be able to articulate why. Overall, students have told me that this is one of their favorite book projects. This Historical Fiction Genre Study Literature Circle Project is a 41-page resource designed for grades 6th, 7th, and 8th. as a culminating project after a literature circle or book group experience focused on historical fiction. It can be modified for lower or higher grades as well. Working in literature circle groups or book clubs, students will read a historical fiction novel, analyze its characters, plot, author's craft , and historical time period, and present their findings to a small group. This project introduces students to the genre of historical fiction and helps them understand its importance and significance. By the end of the project, students should have a good understanding of what historical fiction is. This is a How a Bill Becomes a Law Hexagon Project. This social studies project was designed for 8th – 12th grade students. Learning Intention: To explore the process of lawmaking by following a bill from being an idea to becoming a law. Task: You will be creating a hexagon foldable that explains the legislative process of lawmaking in a way that is easy to understand through the use of pictures and simple text. Directions: -Create a hexagon foldable that describes the legislative process of lawmaking. -Each flap must have the step number on the front with a picture (NO WORDS) and the description of the step on the inside of the flap. -The exposed middle area of the hexagon must have the title of the project ex: “How a Bill Becomes a Law.” -Text must be typed or NEATLY handwritten. Student hexagons must include: - The president’s role - The Senate’s role - The House of Representatives’ role - Role of committees - Role of a congressperson - Role of a citizen There is a Hexagon Project Rubric included. The rubric will score: -Description and content -Images -Organization and conventions You will print a blank hexagon template (included) for students to complete this task. When you have covered the topic of the legislative process of lawmaking with your students, this will be a purposeful project to have students engage in. Students can discuss each component that is a part of this process prior to beginning their individual project. Zombie Government Teacher Simulation Guide Thanks for your support in getting this product! I worked hard to make it a flexible and fun adaptation of the activity I made for my classroom. Don’t hesitate to adapt the activity to best mesh with your classroom. The purpose of this activity is to demonstrate to students how difficult group decision making is, how tricky insurgent groups can be, and how community needs like food, water, education, and entertainment can quickly be neglected when safety concerns are major factors. Each day students will be in their small groups making decisions about their government. You, as the facilitator, act as a kind of game manager. Some groups will find making decisions very easy, others will struggle with basics such as who is in charge? As a general rule of thumb, I make announcements mid-class every day, like a newspaper of the simulation. I can use this opportunity to individualize the conditions within the various groups, or to make things harder on groups that are finding the task easy. See the following page for ideas I’ve used in the past. Here are some general ideas on “events” that could spring up in each QZ: -- Imposter! One of the group members is known to be working with the Fireflies, but it is unclear who (approach a student before class to let them know) -- Food crisis! Rations are short, and it is unclear how to feed the population -- Road blocks! The Fireflies have blocked roads in order to combat the curfew. Now trucks, tanks, and vehicles cannot move throughout the city -- Tainted water! The diseased fungus has entered the water supply! How will the group let their residents know, and provide a solution? -- Assassination! The group leader has been taken out by the Fireflies. How will the group respond? -- An Olive Branch! The Fireflies have proposed a peace treaty, so long as they can have an equal say in all government decisions. If the group has a leader, they will now have 1 Government leader, and 1 Firefly leader. If they have a 5 person council, they will now have a 10 person council (half Fireflies), etc. -- And anything else you can think of! The more creativity the more the game sticks with students.
