Vaping and Peer Pressure SEL Lesson

In this lesson, students will first listen to an NPR podcast of vaping and the teenage brain (link in slides included). They will also read and analyze a story that has to do with a fictional character who ends up vaping and interacts with a number of different people. Students will need to assign responsibility and blame in terms of what happened to Susan. Students will also need to explain why they ranked the way they did for each of the characters in the story. Nobody can have 0% nor 100% in the ranking students decide. There is a ranking order sheet on the second page of the story that can be used for this purpose. This is a higher-order activity where students will be analyzing different peer pressure situations to assign responsibility to different people and there is no right or wrong answer. There is also a 5 slide PowerPoint presentation to guide the lesson from start to finish as well as a lesson outline. The lesson can be taught within a 30-45 period class based on the amount of discussion you encourage. At the end of the lesson students will have a chance to share their ranking and state their reasoning.

Introduction Lesson for Zero and Negative Exponents

This is a 70 slide PowerPoint Lesson is for the introduction of zero and negative exponents. Students are given a step - by - step explanation for understanding fof the properties of zero and negative exponents. The slides start with a review of exponents and uses this review to look for a pattern. The pattern is extended so students see the reasoning behind the rule "any based raised to the zero power is equivalent to one" and " any base raised to the negative power is equivalent to the reciprocal of the base raised to the exponent as postive." There are plenty of examples and problems for students to try on their own at each step. In fact there are more than 40 examples and "try these" problems. Answers are included in each step of the presentation. Slides 1 - 52 deal with whole number bases with zero and negative exponents. Slides 53- 70 deal with denominators of fractions having negative exponents. You can use this lesson over 2 days. Day 1 slides 1 - 52 and Day 2 slides 53 - 70. This 8th grade math lesson corresponds with the Common Core standard: 8.EE .A.1 Know and apply the properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent numerical expressions.

Here is a simple introduction to the political spectrum and political beliefs that can apply to any country or region. It includes: - A handout that shows the names of left and right kinds of government (Communist, Socialist, Liberal, Moderate, Conservative, Right Wing, Fascist) and their main beliefs about the economy, social programs, moral issues, values, progress, and human nature. - A sorting task (cut and paste) of political beliefs on crime and punishment, social programs, the economy, abortion, guns, freedom of expression and more. Students cut out the 12 statements and sort 6 to the left and 6 to the right. Then they find 2-3 local political parties at that level and see their stance on issues like the economy, moral issues, social programs, progress, and crime. Students will learn about how to be a warrior, not a worrier. The use of colorful imagery of male and female warriors will hook students. They will learn about strategies using the acronym S.H.I.E.L.D. They will also be in groups, applying the strategy to a scenario. There are 5 different scenarios. At the end of the lesson, students will draw and write their own strategies inside a shield. These can be displayed on a bulletin board . Feel free to preview the slide show via the preview video. This lesson would also be good for small groups focusing on decreasing anxiety.
