Kinetic Theory of Matter, States of Matter, Change of State - Find the Pair Game for Middle School

This is an engaging and enjoyable memory game on the kinetic theory of matter which uses the particle model to explain change of state, gas pressure and diffusion. Pupils work in teams of three or four. Each team lays out their 42 cards face down in a square and take it in turn to turn over two cards. If the cards are a question and its correct answer, the pupil keeps the pair. If they are not a match they are turned face down and the next pupil gets a turn. This process continues until all cards are matched and the winner is the pupil with the most pairs. If a team member thinks that the selectors pair is not a correct match, they can challenge. Pupils are encouraged to check their books for the correct answer but the teacher also has a quick-check answer sheet. If the challenge is correct, the challenger keeps the pair. -GIRL VERSION- Why we teach sorting and grouping - Sorting and grouping are important skills for young children to learn because they lay the foundation for many other important academic and life skills. Sorting and grouping involve categorizing objects based on common attributes such as color, shape, size, and function. These skills help children to understand and make sense of the world around them. This is a color sorting activity for early learners. This activity is simple, engaging and can help children develop their cognitive, motor and social skills. To conduct this activity , you will need two large cards - one red and one blue, and twelve smaller cards - six cards that are blue and six cards that are red. (There are multiple types of color cards to choose from 1) square color cards 2) square color card with the word of the color on the card 3) color word cards. These different smaller cards adds variety and interest to the activity and helps individualize to different learners. Here are the steps for conducting this activity : 1. Start by introducing the two large color cards to the children and ask them to identify the colors. 2. Then, show them the smaller cards and ask them to identify the colors of these cards as well. 3. Explain to the children that they need to sort the smaller cards onto the larger color cards based on their colors. 4. Model the activity by sorting a few cards yourself and asking the children to observe. Once you have modeled the activity , give each child a set of smaller cards and ask them to sort them onto the corresponding color card. As the children are sorting, observe and offer support and guidance as needed. This is an excerpt that comes from the eBook titled “Middle Schoolin: 50 Stories about the Challenges, Humor, and Rewards of Teaching” written by Paul Rallion. This is from Chapter 33 titled Water Bottle Rockets. In science class, it is important to incorporate hands-on activities because students learn better by doing, according to John Dewey, considered by many the father of modern education. I remember when I was in second grade and my teacher talked about erosion. We went on a field trip to see an arid field with poor or no irrigation, and I was able to see what erosion was and what a field looked like when it occurred. I am sure it would have taken longer for me to learn what erosion was without that field trip. Now I found myself teaching Newton’s laws of motion. These three laws deal with how objects behave at rest and in motion. They are difficult concepts for some students to absorb at the middle school level. Doing this experiment helped my students grab the concept of Newton’s laws of motion better than if I had just talked about them. Students enjoy a hands-on experiment more than a lecture or reading a book. The bottom line is, if you teach science, do hands-on activities and experiments whenever possible. I hope you enjoy! In this activity the learner will be sorting COLORS and is a nice beginner activity for the early learner. It is also great to use with a learner who is more advanced but needs a quick activity that he/she can do independently free of errors. This activity that can help develop a learner's cognitive and perceptual abilities involves sorting colors. The activity can begin by providing the learner with a set of sorting cards that feature different colors (red, blue, green, yellow, etc.). The learner is then asked to sort the cards either by color. For example, the teacher might show the learner a green card and ask the learner to sort all the green cards into one pile, or all the red cards into another pile. The activity can be tailored to the learner's level of ability, gradually introducing more complex colors as the learner becomes more adept at sorting. For younger learners, the cards can feature primary colors, while older learners can be challenged with a more wider range of colors. This activity can be conducted individually or in a group setting, allowing learners to learn from each other and collaborate as they work through the sorting process. It is also a fun and engaging way for learners to develop their sorting skills, which can have practical applications in a variety of fields such as science, engineering, and computer programming. This activity is easy to create. Print, laminate, cut (once) and velcro. You can use a coil binding machine to create a coil bound activity book, or you can use a three hold punch and place in a binder or use binder clips for many years of teaching and learning.
