Chernobyl was a nuclear power plant in Ukraine, which had a terrible accident in 1986. An explosion and a fire happened in the reactor, which released a lot of radioactive material into the air. Radiation is a type of energy that can be harmful to humans and animals if they are exposed to too much of it. The radioactive material from the Chernobyl accident spread over a large area, and many people and animals were exposed to it. The radiation made some people very sick, and some even died from radiation poisoning. Many people had to leave their homes and never go back because the area was too dangerous to live in. After the accident, many countries worked together to try to clean up the area and make it safe again. They built a big structure called the "sarcophagus" around the damaged reactor to contain the radioactive material. People still work to make the area safer today. The Chernobyl accident was a tragedy, but it also taught us a lot about the importance of nuclear safety and the dangers of radiation. We continue to learn from it and work to prevent similar accidents from happening in the future. In this activity, students use the worksheet to explore the History Channel's Chernobyl website to find the answers to the worksheet . Students can work in pairs or individually to complete the task. Garrett Morgan - Inventor Garrett Morgan - Inventor: What an interesting story for Black History Month observed every February across the U.S.! This book about Garrett Morgan, an African-American inventor, tells the story of Morgan and his important inventions: a belt fastener for sewing machines, a gas mask, a traffic signal, and a hair-straightening chemical among others. He is also known for developing a water intake tunnel to help save workers who were trapped fifty feet beneath Lake Erie. Morgan co-founded the Cleveland Association of Colored Men which later merged with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The NAACP is a civil rights organization formed in 1909 to advance justice for African Americans. The First Grade Level F reader has two pages of activities that reinforce the ELA skills and Social Studies-related concepts. Your students will learn about an important figure in U.S. history despite not receiving the full recognition he deserved for his many beneficial contributions to society. How to Make Self-Portraits - Art Project & Presentation Are you wanting your students to create self-portraits but don't know where to begin? This is the resource for you! In this art lesson, I teach students all about self-portraits, including what a self-portrait is and how to create one. My PowerPoint presentation will share with your students some self-portraits by famous artists, how to discuss facial features and skin tones within the classroom setting and how to create a self-portrait including every step of the drawing and painting process. Included in the PowerPoint are easy to follow, detailed steps with photos illustrating each step. I have also included 2 pages of printable stencils to help your students trace the basic outline of a head, neck and shoulder silhouette to get them started and two crown stencils for an optional "Royal Self-Portrait" look that will make your students look like kings and queens. I have also provided 5 pages of reference drawings that students can view while working to help them draw facial features. I have included everything you need to teach your students how to create a self-portrait the easiest way I know how! I know that you and your students will have a great time with this project.
