This o or oo? Phonic Game is a listening game to help the child to hear the ‘oo’ sound in words, as different to the ‘o’ sound as some children have difficulty hearing the new ‘oo’ sound. This is a simple oral game for 2 players to help to develop the ability to hear the sounds as separate in words without the need to worry about text yet. No die needed. These children may have auditory processing difficulties, of which there are growing numbers of children. With the recognition of the needs of these children and timely intervention, many can survive school. Sadly without it, they may soon fall behind. If you have a child who cannot hear the graphemes in words easily, then find or make a game to help. This is one such game you can use. Background to why I made this game One of my pupils has a speech delay. When I introduced him to ‘oo’, he tried to sound out the words saying ‘o’ instead of ‘oo’. It was as if ‘oo’ was a foreign sound to him. So, I devised this game to help him to hear the ‘oo’ sound in words he uses frequently in speech. After playing it a few times he is now happily sounding out to read and spell words with the ‘oo’ sound. This game uses only the ‘oo’ sound as heard in ‘moon’. Who can use the 'o' or 'oo' game? Anyone who is teaching a child who shows difficulty in learning to read words with /oo/, trying instead to say /o/. CVC Word Builder Activity #1

This is the CVC Word Builder Activity #1. Students will practice building Consonant Vowel Consonant words. This is great for young learners including kindergarten, 1st grade, and even some 2nd grade students. If you are a special education teacher, you will especially enjoy having a resource like this in your toolkit. The first page will have a spinner at the top of it. The spinner features 8 letters: c t b n f m p r Students will spin the dial and use the consonant letters to make new words. On the bottom of the first page as well as the following two pages, there are a total of 5 boxes. These boxes are where students will build their CVC words. Each box will feature a vowel in the middle. The 4th page will have the cut outs for students to build words. These cut outs should be printed and laminated for durability. You can place them in a storage baggie, so students do not lose them. Students will spin the dial to determine what their beginning consonant and ending consonant will be for the word they are set to build. Then students will write 2 new words they have learned below each of the boxes after they make their word. This is a great reusable activity once you have laminated all pages and pieces included. For students who need an additional challenge, they can write sentences using the CVC words they have built.

This resource is a Sight Word Popcorn Activity. Here is a simple yet effective way of practicing sight words (otherwise known as dolch, or “popcorn” words). Copy and cut the sight word popcorn pieces and laminate for durability. A fun way to present this activity is to purchase some plastic popcorn containers to use. Place the popcorn words in a larger container that students cannot see into A popcorn label is included to print and paste to the front of a plain bag. Students take turns picking a popcorn piece without looking, and reading the word if they can.
