Back to School ELA Review for 6th Grade | 20 Daily Lessons

Back to School ELA Review for 6th Grade | 20 Daily Lessons
ELA, Grade 6, Assessments, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans, Worksheets & Printables

Start the school year with a rigorous yet manageable 6th grade back to school ELA review designed to revisit essential Grade 5 reading, grammar, vocabulary, word study, and writing skills. With 20 daily lessons plus 16 print-and-play literacy games , this resource helps sixth graders refresh key skills, build confidence, and transition into middle school ELA routines. Each lesson follows a predictable four-part rhythm— Read & Think, Language & Grammar, Word Work, and Write About It —with a full lesson designed for approximately 15–25 minutes . Skills spiral across the 20 days, moving from focused review into more complex analysis, evidence, argument, editing, vocabulary, and reflection. What’s Included This 6th grade ELA review includes: ✅ 20 daily ELA review lessons ✅ 40 pages of daily student lessons ✅ Short fiction and nonfiction passages ✅ Reading comprehension questions ✅ Central idea and summary practice ✅ Theme and character development ✅ Inference and text evidence practice ✅ Claim and evidence activities ✅ Evaluating evidence practice ✅ Grammar and language review ✅ Vocabulary and word study ✅ Greek and Latin roots ✅ Advanced prefixes and suffixes ✅ Academic vocabulary ✅ Daily writing prompts ✅ 16 print-and-play literacy games and activities ✅ Partner and small-group activities ✅ Literacy center options ✅ Complete answer key for all 20 days ✅ Teacher Guide ✅ 20-day pacing overview ✅ Four-week planning guide ✅ Differentiation suggestions ✅ Game preparation directions ✅ Game-to-skill quick-reference map ✅ Class progress record sheet ✅ Family letter ✅ Student reflection ✅ Reading Star Award The 68-page Student Workbook contains 20 daily lessons plus 16 print-and-play games for centers, partners, small groups, and independent practice. The separate Answer Key provides complete responses for all 20 daily lessons, organized by section for faster checking, with reasonable student wording accepted for open writing and reflection tasks. How It Works in the Classroom Use this 6th grade back to school ELA review for morning work, bell ringers, whole-group warm-ups, independent practice, literacy centers, small groups, intervention, homework, early finishers, or beginning-of-year formative assessment. Each daily lesson follows the same student-friendly structure: 📖 Read & Think — Students read a short fiction, nonfiction, or persuasive passage and answer four comprehension questions, including inference and text-evidence items ✏️ Language & Grammar — Students revisit a focused Grade 5 language skill 🔤 Word Work — Students practice Greek and Latin roots, advanced affixes, context clues, connotation and denotation, figurative language, analogies, shades of meaning, and academic vocabulary 📝 Write About It — Students complete a short writing task connected to the day’s passage and thinking The Teacher Guide recommends previewing the genre, asking students to identify evidence behind their answers, modeling the first grammar item, and then releasing students to work independently or with a partner. The 20-Day Pacing at a Glance chart on page 6 of the Teacher Guide visually maps the full progression across reading, language, and word work. Students move from central idea and summary, theme development, character development, tone and mood, and plot and conflict into inference and evidence, cause and effect, compare and contrast, author’s purpose and perspective, point of view, text structure, claim and evidence, evaluating evidence, citing evidence, drawing conclusions, comparing across texts, mixed review, and final reflection. For a four-week routine, teachers can assign workbook lessons Monday through Thursday and use Friday for a game, literacy center rotation, or catch-up. The suggested planning guide pairs each week with targeted games based on the skills being reviewed. Standards & Learning Goals This Grade 5 skills review for 6th grade revisits key learning across five major ELA strands: 📚 Reading Comprehension — central idea and summary, theme development, character development, tone and mood, plot and conflict, inference and evidence, cause and effect, compare and contrast, author’s purpose and perspective, point of view, text structure, claim and evidence, evaluating evidence, citing evidence, drawing conclusions, making inferences, comparing across texts, and mixed reading review ✏️ Grammar & Language — independent and dependent clauses, simple/compound/complex sentences, pronoun case, active and passive voice, subject-verb agreement, phrases and clauses, commas and semicolons, colons and lists, punctuating titles and dialogue, apostrophes and possessives, parallel structure, misplaced modifiers, capitalization, consistent tense and voice, transitions, comprehensive editing, commonly confused words, concise language, and mixed grammar review 🔤 Word Study — Greek and Latin roots, roots and affixes, advanced prefixes, suffixes, affix meanings, and root review 💬 Vocabulary — context clues, connotation and denotation, homographs, homophones, figurative language, idioms, analogies, shades of meaning, academic vocabulary, word relationships, and mixed vocabulary review 📝 Writing — summary writing, argument writing, claim and evidence, character analysis, mood and setting description, cause-and-effect explanation, compare-and-contrast writing, persuasive writing, problem-solution writing, text-based responses, concise language, inference-based writing, narrative continuation, and reflection The daily workbook intentionally pairs skills across strands. For example, Day 1 combines central idea and summary with independent and dependent clauses plus roots and affixes ; Day 8 combines compare and contrast with colons and lists plus homophones ; Day 12 combines claim and evidence with misplaced modifiers and connotation ; and Day 18 combines comparing across texts with concise language and root review . Why Teachers Love It ✨ Build a consistent first-month routine. The same four-part structure repeats across all 20 days, helping students know what to expect while building independence. ✨ Review multiple ELA strands in one resource. Reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, word study, and writing are integrated into manageable daily practice. ✨ Get 20 days of ready-to-use review. The pacing is already mapped, and the visual chart on page 6 of the Teacher Guide shows exactly how reading, language, and word-work skills spiral across the month. ✨ Strengthen middle school reading readiness. Students practice central idea, theme development, tone and mood, inference, evidence, author’s perspective, point of view, text structure, argument, evaluating evidence, citing evidence, drawing conclusions, and comparing across texts. ✨ Revisit rigorous Grade 5 grammar skills. Practice includes clauses, sentence structure, pronoun case, active and passive voice, subject-verb agreement, semicolons, colons, parallel structure, modifiers, dialogue punctuation, apostrophes, transitions, concise language, and comprehensive editing. ✨ Build stronger vocabulary and morphology skills. Students work with Greek and Latin roots, advanced prefixes and suffixes, context clues, connotation and denotation, homographs, homophones, idioms, figurative language, analogies, shades of meaning, and academic vocabulary. ✨ Include meaningful writing every day. Students summarize, argue, compare, explain, cite details, describe mood, evaluate claims, continue narratives, write inference-based scenes, and reflect on growth. ✨ Add hands-on practice with 16 literacy games and activities , including: Clause Sort Root Word Match Synonym Match Roll-a-Root Word Academic Vocabulary BINGO Multisyllable Roll & Read Prefix Sort Antonym Match Reading Road Race Central Idea Baskets Claim or Evidence Sort Sentence Building Tiles Fix-It Cards Sequence Cards Homophone Match Figurative Language Sort The Game → Skill Quick Map on page 9 of the Teacher Guide pairs each activity with its target skill, including independent and dependent clauses, Greek and Latin roots, academic vocabulary, reading fluency, advanced prefixes, central idea and details, claim versus evidence, compound-complex sentences, editing, text structure, commonly confused words, and figurative language. ✨ Prep once and reuse throughout the year. The Teacher Guide recommends printing game pages on cardstock, laminating boards and cards, cutting pieces apart, and storing each game in a labeled bag for repeated use. ✨ Differentiate without creating entirely separate lessons. The Teacher Guide includes support ideas for below-level students, on-level learners, above-level students, and multilingual learners. ✨ Use daily work as low-stakes formative assessment. The Class Record Sheet on page 10 of the Teacher Guide provides Week 1 through Week 4 tracking columns plus a notes section, making it easier to identify skills that may need reteaching. ✨ Save time checking student work. The included Answer Key covers all 20 days and organizes responses by day and section for quick reference. ✨ Support home-school communication. ELA, Resources for Teachers, Reading Comprehension, Reading, Language Development, Pre-Reading, Vocabulary, Science, Technology, Engineering, Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Teacher Tools, Centers, Activities, Literacy Readers, Quizzes, Quizzes and Tests, Assessments

This Guided Reading Book - Bridges Strong and Safe (Level H) includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. DOWNLOAD THE CATALOG TO VIEW ALL GUIDED READING BOOKS AVAILABLE (SORTED LEVELS A-Z) Pre-Reading Question (x1) Teacher asks the prompt aloud, can be while showing the cover or first page. Students share what they already know, or make educated guesses from the cover. Prompt them to use the target vocabulary. Write some of their responses on the board to look back at during the reading. Vocabulary Words (x5) Introduce the five words, best doing it one at a time. Start by saying it, while students repeat and then see if anyone knows what it means before reading further. Read through the meaning and try to briefly connect each word to a picture or gesture so it’s meaningful. Ask students to flip through the book pages and point to where they see each of the vocabulary words. While reading the book pause upon coming across one of the vocab words or read the sentence twice to make sure students understand the word has appeared. Optional: Ask students to raise hands whenever they see/hear one of the new words. Guided Reading Pages (x10) Check the book snapshot (below) for: primary topic - do you need to prep extra reading or intro materials on this? what is taught best - decide on 1-2 bullets to focus on, use the prompt or words provided here for best results. learning goals - what you are checking for students to be able to do after the session, elicit answers using prompts or words provided. key vocabulary (see section above). questions overview - so you know what is coming up and if you need to prep extra materials to assist understanding. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level. Comprehension Questions (back cover x3) This is your way to check that students didn’t just say the words, but actually understood the text. First, let students answer by pointing to the page/picture and saying a short sentence. After any answer, follow with: “Show me where you found that in the text.” In bigger groups, have partners answer first (10–20 seconds), then call on 2–3 students to share. Differentiation tips: Emerging speakers/struggling readers: oral + pointing On-level: oral in a full sentence Higher: one written sentence or draw + label Book Snapshot Title: Bridges: Strong and Safe Genre: Nonfiction (informational) Subject: Science (Engineering) Primary Topic: Bridge types, parts, and forces that affect bridges Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): H What This Book Teaches Best Explains what bridges do: connect two places and help people and vehicles cross obstacles. Introduces several bridge types and what makes each one work (beam, arch, suspension, truss). Teaches key bridge parts and supports (deck, abutments, piers) using clear definitions in context. Builds science/engineering understanding of forces that act on bridges (gravity, tension, compression). Shows that scientists and engineers work together to keep bridges safe. Learning Goals Students will explain how bridges help people, cars, and trains travel using text details. Students will identify and describe at least two types of bridges named in the book. Students will use the book’s words to tell what a bridge deck is and what it does. Students will describe how gravity, tension, and compression affect bridges, based on the text. Students will explain what piers do and why they must be deep and steady. Key Vocabulary From the Text deck — the flat top part of a bridge. abutments — the ends an arch bridge pushes against. tension — a pulling force that stretches materials. compression — a pushing or squeezing force. piers — supports that go into ground or water. Discussion Prompts Pre-reading question: How do you think bridges help people get from one place to another? Comprehension questions: What do bridges help cars, trains, and people do? What is the flat top of a beam bridge called? What do piers keep a bridge from doing when wind blows or water flows fast? Printing Tips 1. Best Printing Method (Recommended) “Booklet” Printing (Best if Available) If your printer or PDF viewer supports Booklet Printing , use this. Settings to use: Print mode: Booklet Paper size: Letter or A4 (either works) Orientation: Landscape Print on both sides: Yes Flip on: Short edge Scaling: Fit to printable area Booklet subset: First test: Front sides only Then: Back sides only This will automatically: Pair pages correctly Put the cover on the outside Align everything for folding After printing, fold in half and staple along the spine . 2. If “Booklet” Printing Is NOT Available You can still print this correctly with manual duplex printing . Step-by-step: Open the PDF. Choose Print . Set: Orientation: Landscape Pages per sheet: 1 Print on both sides: Yes Flip on: Short edge Print all pages . Because each PDF page already contains two facing book pages, the result will still fold cleanly into a book. Thousands of Cored Education products are included with your TeachSimple membership. The following is the description of the FULL resource and the downloading links: Waves, Light, Imaging: Physical Science Reading Comprehension Passages and Questions (Google) This very engaging collection of physical science reading passages about Waves, Light, and Imaging is designed to bridge the gap between science and literacy through strengthening reading comprehension and sparking scientific curiosity in middle school students. Each passage blends English Language Arts skills with accurate science content that supports NGSS classroom practice. Ideal for interdisciplinary learning in ELA and Science. Suitable for Grade 9 review, too! What Is Included? There are (3) informational passages: How Sound Travels: Sound starts with a vibration that squeezes and stretches nearby matter, sending a wave through air, water, or solid material. The ear and brain team up to turn those moving pressures into the pitch and loudness we hear, which is why sound needs a medium. Seeing Color: Reflection, Absorption, Refraction: Color shows up only when light hits an object and some wavelengths bounce back to the eye. Materials reflect, absorb, or bend light differently, so a prism, a black backpack, or even dim lighting can change what we see. Cameras: From Dark Rooms to Smartphones: A simple darkened box with a tiny opening once projected faint, upside-down scenes onto a wall. Adding lenses, mirrors, film, and later digital sensors turned that idea into cameras for art, news, and everyday life, ending with phones that can snap and share in seconds. Student Tasks for Each Passage: 5 multiple-choice questions targeting main idea, key details, inference, vocabulary in context, and use of evidence 5 vocabulary matching items with clear, student-friendly definitions 5 text-based questions that require citing specific lines or facts 1 summary prompt that asks students to condense central ideas accurately Full answer key for every section Available Formats for this Resource PDF Google Docs FULL CATALOG OF DOWNLOADING LINKS HERE Other Science Reading Collections and Topics You May Find in the Store: 1.
