Math, Measurements, Grade 2, 3, 4, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans

This product covers the 2016 Virginia (VA) Standards of Learning (SOL) 3.10: The student will read temperature to the nearest degree. It contains notes pages on reading and understanding a thermometer. It includes notes on how to read a standard linear thermometer, a circular thermometer, and how to estimate the temperature when the arrow or mercury is between two lines/numbers. It also has notes pages on constant temperatures, like freezing and boiling, and general temperatures, like what constitutes a "warm" day versus a "cool" one. It also includes notes pages on what is a reasonable response to the temperature (like, would you wear flip flops when it is freezing?). All of these items explore both the Celsius scale and Fahrenheit scale so students are exposed to both customary and metric systems of measuring the temperature. The notes pages come in two sizes. The first size is a full-page size. You can print them as-is, or you can print them two to a pages. This is what I do as it saves on paper and the sheets will fit in a notebook. The second size is formatted to fit on a standard composition notebook page. Additionally, there are two links included in the pdf: one which opens a digital version of the notes, and another that opens a slide show version, optimized for a projector or interactive board. In both cases, which you click the link, you will be prompted to make a copy, which you can then use with Google Slides or download and use with Keynote or PowerPoint. What's included? Vocabulary Measuring Temperature on a Linear Thermometer Linear Thermometer Practice Measuring Temperature on a Circular Thermometer Circular Thermometer Practice Practical Uses of Measuring Temperature Important Temperatures to Remember Reasonable Choices Based on Temperature Practice Note that each practice page comes with an answer key.

Introduction Lesson for Multiplication of Fractions

Introduction Lesson for Multiplication of Fractions
Math, Fractions, Grade 5, Lesson Plans, Teacher Tools

This a twenty eight page PowerPoint lesson for teaching multiplication of fractions both conceptually and with the standard algorithm. The first slides explain the meaning of the parts of a fraction. Next multiplication of fractions is compare to "of" and "use". Four multiplication problems are shown and explained using circle fraction models. Next students are asked to look at these 4 problems and see a pattern. The algorithm for multiplying fractions is revealed. Students are shown a problem using the algorithm and then are asked to complete 3 problems on their own. Finally a summary of the lesson is given and an exit problem is given to the students. All answers are given withing the lesson. This lesson corresponds to Common Core 5th grade math standard: This PowerPoint can be edited to meet the needs of your students. 5.NF.B.4 Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction by a fraction. a. Interpret the product (a/b) x q as a parts of a partition of q into b equal parts; equivalently, as the result of a sequence of operations a x q / b. For example, use a visual fraction model to show (2/3) x (4/5) = 8/15. (In general,(a/b) x (c/d) = ac/bd.)

Multiplying Binomials – FOIL Visual Math Lesson
Math, Algebra, Multiplication and Division, Division, Grade 8, 9, 10, 11, Lesson Plans, Teacher Tools

This lesson carefully walks students through a comprehensive and visual explanation of multiplication of two binomials using an area model before introducing the mnemonic FOIL. How many times have your students memorized FOIL, but had no idea why it works or what they even doing when using it? This lesson can address that gap. It uses clear visuals and colour-coding to make the information salient. (It can be printed black and white, and students shade the appropriate areas). It walks students through an area model without variables first before introducing variables and combining like terms. A sheet of practice problems of increasing levels of difficulty is included for students to reinforce what they have learned. ANSWER KEY INCLUDED You will be able to use the language, visuals, and methods from this lesson when teaching the reverse operation (factoring trinomials) at a later date. Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for high school algebra classes (grades 8-11) or special education classes who are teaching some early algebra. It should help visual learners understand what is actually happening when two binomials are being multiplied and why the mnemonic FOIL works. Standards: CCSSHSA-APR.A.1 Understand that polynomials form a system analogous to the integers, namely, they are closed under the operations of addition, subtraction, and multiplication; add, subtract, and multiply polynomials.
