This ready-to-print set of 5 stations or math centres will supplement a middle school geometry unit about fraction operations: including adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators and multiplying and dividing proper and improper fractions. I have included lots of real-life examples such as recipes, time, and portions of food, along with lots of visual representations and diagrams for the four operations. Math stations are an excellent way to get students engaged as they move about the room and work cooperatively with their peers. Even when students are in intermediate grades, they benefit from a variety of teaching strategies including the use of stations to make math class more interactive. Station 1: Students solve four word problems using fraction operations. I encourage them to also draw diagrams to help where applicable. (optional: set out white boards for students to use) Station 2: Students play a fraction dice game to practice adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. Extension: they can use improper fractions for an extra challenge. (supplies needed: 6- or 10-sided dice and 2-sided counters) Station 3: Students work with fractions to double a real recipe. Station 4: Students show multiplication and division of fractions visually to enhance understanding. As we usher in another Back to School season, it's time to build relationships, lay down the ground rules, establish a daily routine, and foster a positive classroom environment! Utilizing STATIONS, you can accomplish all these effectively in roughly two class periods. This adaptable 8-Station resource empowers you to modify, augment, or exclude any content that doesn't align with your class needs! It is recommended to allocate about 10 minutes for students to wrap up each station. The stations can be tackled in any order. Any station that doesn't apply to your class can be removed without impacting the overall activity. Detailed instructions for EACH station are provided! Included Stations (Designed for students in grades 7-12): 1- Introduction: An ice-breaker that encourages students to find ten shared interests within a set of guidelines, fostering classroom camaraderie. 2- Team Building: A fun and challenging task where groups of 3-4 are tasked with constructing the tallest tower within a given timeframe while adhering to set rules! 3- Cell phone Policy: In this activity, students watch a short video about the consequences of inappropriate cell phone use, especially social media, in the classroom. All handouts, station table tents, and station instructions are provided. For the stations, you'll need to provide: paper, large butcher paper or poster, tape, scissors, color tools, markers, computer access (for two stations). Students will explore and discover what a lightyear is with this What is a Lightyear? Activity . Teacher Instructions: The unit of astronomical distance, light-years, can be a difficult but essential concept for students to comprehend. This activity will get your students moving and, hopefully, help them understand what a light-year is. Step One: Give your definition of light-years to your students and explain why this is important for them to understand. I like to tell my students that Proxima Centauri is our nearest star, and it is 154.243 light years away. Let’s pretend we have a friend on Proxima Centauri right now. If we went outside and waved to him, when would he see us waving? He would not see us waving until 4.243 years from now. that is because it takes light 4.243 years to reach him. Step Two: Make copies of the table attached and hand out to your students. Clear some room in your class or go outside. Line your students up and tell them to run for one second. Have them look at how far they traveled and tell them that that is considered their run-second. Have them line up again and tell them to start running. Time them running for one minute. Have them measure the distance they traveled. Tell them to record the distance on their recording table next to “my run minute.” Bring them back into class and instruct them to figure out their run-week, run-month, and run-year. Conclude by telling your students that their run-year is how far they would travel in one year. A light-year is how far light travels in one year.
