My Bug Jar Writing & Art Activity

My Bug Jar Writing & Art Activity
ELA, Writing, Handwriting, Science, Life Sciences, Insects, Kindergarten, Activities

This engaging resource leverages students’ natural curiosity about insects to creatively strengthen academic skills ranging from science to literacy to art. Centered around an interactive “bug catching” jar, the materials transform an imaginary entomology expedition into applied opportunities to practice identification, sorting, fine motor control, and descriptive writing about beloved creepy crawlies. Ten vivid insect illustrations spanning ants to butterflies allow teachers to incorporate either the full set or customized selection matching current science topics or student interests. After introducing vocabulary terms, students trace then carefully cut out their favorites to create an individualized bug repository showcasing beloved insects. Templates support differentiation with labeled versus unlabeled variations to trace based on age or ability. Once illustrations are cut out, children glue chosen creepy crawlies to their personalized jar which has space to add their name and color. The hands-on process strengthens dexterity while allowing teachers to check comprehension through observing if students successfully matched labels to corresponding bugs. Discussion questions, learning extensions and writing prompts stimulate deeper reflection about facts or traits that distinguish assorted insects. Upon filling their jar, early finishers are challenged to rearrange specimens in alphabetical order or partner to share fun entomology facts. This transforms solitary art time into opportunities to showcase sorting abilities or emerging background knowledge. The take-home project sparks pride in academic skills while spotlighting each child’s one-of-a-kind bug preferences. This versatile cross-disciplinary resource allows flexible implementation for whole groups, stations or independent exploration. Students of all ability levels will thrive while creating unique bug jars brimming with beloved insects to launch content learning in memorably hands-on style. How Do Astronauts Meet Their Needs in Outer Space? (Middle School Extreme Environment Research)

How Do Astronauts Meet Their Needs in Outer Space? (Middle School Extreme Environment Research)
Science, Technology, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Environmental Science, Space, Earth Sciences, Grade 6, 7, 8, 9, Activities

This middle school science lesson introduces the essential needs that humans (astronauts) must meet in order to survive while exploring in the extreme environment of outer space: •Oxygen •Water •Food •Waste Removal •Temperature •Light •Pressure How to Use: One need (oxygen) is comprehensively explained as an example to show your students. You can assign the other six needs as you see fit: Students can research one or two individually or in small groups and share the information with the class (a jigsaw activity), or they can complete the whole assignment independently. This is also a great way to help your students practice using focused search terms on the internet. You can do a quick mini-lesson on an interactive whiteboard, showing them how you would search for one of the items before letting them use technology to do research themselves. Student Instructions: Humans have several needs that must be met to survive in any extreme environment on Earth or in space. We need to have oxygen to breathe, water to drink, food to eat, a way to store or remove waste, a certain temperature to keep our body safe, some light (but protection from too much direct sunlight), and the correct pressure so our organs don’t collapse or explode. We use different kinds of technology to meet all of these needs in space. You will research how humans survive in space. Find specific answers, draw diagrams , and be ready to share what you have learned with your classmates. The first need is completed for you below. Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for middle school students in grades 6-9 who are studying extreme environments and/or space exploration in science or earth science class. What's Included: 4 Page PDF Title Page Handout and Sample 2 Page Graphic Organizer for Student Research If you are studying extreme environments in general, check out my other products for your unit! Color Foxgloves: Science Coloring Pages
Creative Arts, Art, Science, Life Sciences, Nature & Plants, Kindergarten, Preschool, Grade 1, Activities

Color Foxgloves: Science Coloring Pages Here is a picture of Foxgloves for children to colour this spring/summer! Who is this colouring picture of Holly for? Anybody. Older children will extend the activity further than younger ones, Suitable fro class use Suitable fro homeschool botany or nature study lessons, Charlotte Mason style. Uses for these colouring sheets Use to help children learn the name of Foxgloves and to recognise them. Use as part of a science lesson on plants/flowers/pollinators (as bees love Foxgloves!) Paint or colour. Use to make greeting card The study of the natural world is the foundation for the later study of science. The colouring of pictures of natural things, be it plants or animals is more than a pastime activity. It is a means of familiarising young children with these everyday subjects. The colouring of this Foxglove picture can of course be used as a pastime, or even as part of a creative lesson - the picture looks super made into a greeting card of all kinds. But it has the potential to teach much more. The Curriculum for Science expects children to be taught to use the local environment to study plants and animals, throughout the year. What better than to use familiar subjects - such as Foxgloves which is sure to attract attention in summer with their large, bright pink flowers? The name alone gives cause for thought: fox-gloves? And insects, especially bees can be seen following the trail on the landing pad up into the 'bell' to find nectar. There's plenty to talk about! Colouring can help children to become familiar with the parts of the Foxglove plant and ask questions: What are the leaves like? Why is there a pattern on the flower? What is inside a berry? (the nectar). Why do the flowers need the insects to pollinate them? Colouring a picture of Foxgloves can also help children become familiar with the particular characteristics of a plant - its shape, colour, and special features, for example. It is best if children colour the Foxglove picture following close observation, from reference books, or after looking at Foxgloves in real life. see if you can find them growing in the vicinity of your home/school. What is included in the pack? 1 sheet to be coloured 1 sheet giving an example of how the picture could be coloured.

Human Digestion and the Digestive System-Reading Comprehension Article Delve into the intricate world of our digestive system with this comprehensive educational reading designed for students in the 9th grade and beyond. This educational tool is crafted to enlighten learners on the fascinating processes that fuel our bodies, from the initial intake of nutrients to their final journey within us. Key Learning Points: The Fundamentals of Digestive Processes The Complex Structure of the Digestive Network The Dynamics of Digestive Mechanics and Biochemical Breakdown The Role of Digestive Catalysts in Nutrient Breakdown The Pathway of Nutrient Assimilation The Cycle of Waste Disposal Strategies for Managing Digestive Health and Nutritional Well-being Embark on the Digestive Voyage The remarkable journey of digestion represents the body's natural mechanism for distilling nourishment from our intake. It initiates in the oral cavity, where edibles undergo preliminary processing via mastication and enzymatic action within the saliva. As food descends through the esophagus, it ventures into the gastric region, where further digestion occurs under the influence of stomach secretions. Advancing into the intestinal region, the core of digestive activity, various enzymes help break down our food into fundamental molecules ready for cellular uptake. This intricate process fuels our bodies and allows us to survive. Indigestible remains are sent to the large intestine and rectum where it is eventually released from the system. This intricate voyage from ingestion to excretion showcases the harmonious interplay between physical and biochemical digestion, enzyme functionality, and the collective effort of digestive organs to sustain life.
