A pack of 32 Phonic reading books with matching PowerPoints and workbooks to support learning. This is an incremental phonics reading scheme with a difference. Introducing just 10 words in each phonics family, the words are repeated from book to book, giving even those with very poor word recall the chance to learn to read fluently without having to decode every word. The books cover these sounds and must be taught in this order: CK; OO; SH; CH; ND/NT; NK; TH; NG; AR; OR; A-E; I-E, O-R, U-E, AI, EA, OA, IGH Rationale: It has long been proven that teaching children to decode is a powerful tool for teaching reading, as opposed to the Look and Say method. However, this has led to a proliferation of reading books that throw as many words with a shared phonics sound into a book as possible, not realising that some children with very poor word recall find it hard to recognise words when they see them again without much repetition. To combat this problem, while we recognise that, technically, once a child has been taught a new sound s/he can sound out many words with that new sound, when it comes to reading fluently a child needs a core set of words in each family that they can recognise, which can act as a launch pad as they gain confidence. These books have been designed accordingly. For each sound family, just 10 words are studied with the help of the workbooks and are then repeated throughout the books, each book building on the vocabulary that has already been learned, repeating it and including it in new phrases as new sounds are learned. As the programme progresses, new sounds from the learned families are incorporated to widen vocabulary, while taking care to maintain fluency. The books are designed to limit guessing (though most children will try and guess, which must be avoided at all costs). Introduces most high-frequency words in the phonics family to which they belong, and gradually introduces genuine, non-decodable sight words into the text without causing overload or throwing the child off course. Vowel Games gives much-needed practice of the vowels - 5 letters which can seem very similar to many children as they are produced at the back of the throat. Match It! A game that can be player don two levels. The first level involves just initial letters. The second level uses CVC words for which the child (if able) can be encouraged to sound out the CVC words, or just look at the initial sound. Hide and Seek Alphabet Matching Cards has a set of cards with a letter of the alphabet on each and set of picture cards - one for each letter of the alphabet. To play, each student will need one gameboard, one die, 20 objects to mark the inner part of the game board, and a game piece for each student playing. Sight Words Fluency Game for Kindergarten through Grade 3 This sight words learning game helps build reading fluency with Fry's first 100 high frequency words. Students race to identify and "swat" the sight words called out by the teacher. The game can be played whole group or in small groups. Print the words on cardstock, laminate for durability, and cut apart to make game pieces. Provide each student with a fly swatter. The teacher calls out a sight word and students race to find and cover the matching word with their swatter. The first student to identify and swat the correct word wins the card. For more of a challenge, cover the swatters with an additional piece of laminated cardstock. Attach with packing tape or glue. The cover forces students to visually focus when searching for the called out word. Play the basic game without velcro for a quicker pace. I have written them for pupils who struggle with processing information - especially sounds. This includes children who are DYSLEXIC or have ANY other kind of processing disorder. Such children may have failed with other methods of teaching phonics. Such pupils need activities that: ·are highly structured - one tiny step at a time building on the one before using only a limited number of words to start with and only using words that the child has already learnt to sound out, with no nasty surprises. ·Have only a little on each pageas these pupils tire easily. What makes these worksheets special? I have a powerful three-step process which I use with my special needs pupils, which is worked out over the course of the 23 worksheets: 1. See it!where we focus on becoming aware of the new sound in words. This involves first hearing the new sound in words and then seeing it in words (tracking). 2. Sound-it-out!Having learnt to see the new sound in words, we learn to sound out these words to read and write them. We begin by usingsound-it-out boxesfor reading and spelling which help the child to segment the word prior to blending the sounds together. Once the child can read and write individual words, we work on fluency by building familiarity with the common words in the new sound family. Once the child can sound the words out to read and spell confidently, we move on to recognising them/using them in longer reading and dictation passages, as soon as the child is able. I provide 2 reading passages with comprehension exercises and one dictation passage, with a page in the workbook dedicated to it, with room for a picture, which again cements understanding. 3. Write it! Incorporated into the above two steps, we constantly write the new sound. This adds a multi-sensory dimension to our work - we see with our eyes, we sound it with our mouth parts and voice, and then we move by writing. All three steps work together to help the child feel in control of his/her learning and to become a successful, confident learner. Simply choose the pages each child needs and put them together to make a work book! We finish each sound with a dictation which culminates our work before we move on to the next sound. I try to give the dictation a week after we finish the work on the EA sound to act as revision. The dictation: Read this passage to your pupil, who should write it. Have the child read his/her work and check for errors. Make sure the writing is completely accurate before saying the child has finished, including full stops and capital letters correctly used. Dog Breeds Domino – A Calm Coloring & Matching Game for Elementary Students This printable domino game is a quiet and creative way for students to explore different dog breeds while practicing matching skills and early reading. The cards are all black and white, so students can color them themselves – something my third graders always look forward to. It gives them a sense of ownership over the material and creates a nice break from more structured tasks. The idea is simple: each domino shows either a dog breed name or a drawing, and students have to find the correct pairs. The illustrations are clear and recognizable, even without color, so they work well for younger learners or students still developing their vocabulary. The breed names are printed in an easy-to-read font, which helps build confidence in early readers. I’ve used this activity in a few different contexts: – as a quiet task for early finishers – in small group centers – during indoor recess on rainy days – or as part of a broader unit on animals and pets It also opens up room for short, low-pressure conversations – for example, “Which one do you think is the fastest?” or “Would you want a dog like that at home?” If you work with a therapy or school dog, like I do, it’s a great way to bring that connection into the classroom without needing a full lesson plan. Here is a quick no-prep game for any elementary classroom: Categories! It helps teach vocabulary, parts of speech, geography, & critical and creative thinking. This product includes a one-page instruction sheet including the skills taught, different player configurations, rules, a sample round, and extension ideas. This game requires NO PREP and NO MATERIALS other than writing implements. I suggest whiteboards to save paper. Grades to Use With: This game can be used in any elementary classroom (grades K-8). It is great for the following uses: · - Morning/home-room warm-up · - TOC back-up activity · - To fill the 5 minutes before lunch or the end of the day · - As a reward for small-group or one-to-one tutoring Categories Rules: Start by writing 5 categories from the following options on the board: animals, cities, verbs, fruits, toys, pet names, countries, adjectives, beverages, colours, holidays, vehicles, movies, kitchen tools, flowers, books. Then choose one letter of the alphabet. Students get two minutes to think of a word for each category staring with that letter. Sample Round: Categories: -Cities -Pet names -Adjectives -Kitchen tools -Colors Letter: R Sample answers: Riga, Rover, Rosy, Rice Maker, Red If you want to make the game extra challenging for older students, you can award points ONLY for unique answers. This e or ee? Phonic Game is a listening game to help the child to hear the ‘ee’ sound in words, as different to the ‘e’ sound as some children have difficulty hearing the new ‘ee’ sound. This is a simple oral game for 2 players to help to develop the ability to hear the sounds as separate in words without the need to worry about text yet. No die needed. These children may have auditory processing difficulties, of which there are growing numbers of children. With the recognition of the needs of these children and timely intervention, many can survive school. Sadly without it, they may soon fall behind. If you have a child who cannot hear the graphemes in words easily, then find or make a game to help. This is one such game you can use. Background to why I made this game One of my pupils has a speech delay. When I introduced him to ‘ee’, he tried to sound out the words by saying ‘e’ instead of ‘ee’. It was as if ‘ee’ was a foreign sound to him. So, I devised this game to help him to hear the ‘ee’ sound in words he uses frequently in speech. After playing it a few times he is now happily sounding out to read and spell words with the ‘ee’ sound. Who can use thee or ee? Phonic Game? Anyone who is teaching a child who shows difficulty learning to read words with /ee/, trying instead to say /e/. Practice reading and writing long vowel AGE words with these fun dice games for CVCe words. Students will practice recognizing, reading, writing and spelling words with the AGE rime with the magic e phonics rule. What is Included: Dice templates to go with each of the game mats Seven recording mats that go with one of the dice sets. To play, students will roll the dice. Depending on the mat they are using, students will color, trace, cover, graph, or write the word or image that was rolled. By having many activity mats, these games can be easily differentiated for that students that need more support. These dice games make great literacy or phonics stations or centers. More Ways to Use these Dice Games: For a single player game, students can use the tracing worksheets to trace the word or picture they rolled. For a single player game, students can use the grid worksheets to color or cover the word or picture they rolled. For a single player game, students can create a graph by rolling the dice a set number of times, then filling in the blank grid squares by coloring or covering the spaces. For a partner game, students can play Three in a Row. To play, students use the grid paper with the words in a random order. Students take turns rolling the dice and coloring or covering the words in the grid. The first player to get three words in a row wins. For a partner game, use the tracing pages to roll and take turns tracing the words or picture rolled. The player who traces the most words at the end of time wins! Skills Assessed Blending of Onset and Rime in CVCe Words Reading, Tracing, Writing and Spelling CVCe Words The dice game mats require no prep. They just need to be printed out and put in the center or station you wish to use them in. The dice will need to be assembled. You will need to print them out on card stock or other heavy weight paper, cut, fold and tape together. The mats can be laminated to make them reusable, especially of you need to save paper. Dry erase markers can be used on the writing and tracing mats.
