Beginning Sound and Ending Sound Matching Game

Preschool and kindergarten students will have fun practicing phonological awareness skills by identifying the beginning sounds and ending sounds in words with these phonics matching cards. What is Included: In this phonics card set, there are 24 total cards, available in both color and black and white. Each set of cards makes 12 pairs of words with the same beginning sounds and ending sounds. Ways to Use: Concentration or Memory Game : Students will start the game by having all of the cards face down. Each student will take turns turning over 2 cards. If both the beginning sound and ending sound of both cards match, then the student keeps the pair. If they do not, then the student puts them back face down. The student with the most correct pairs wins. Find a Partner: The teacher starts by giving each student one of the picture cards. The students then look around at the cards the other students have to see if it matches their beginning sound and their ending sound. Once they find their match, then they found their partner. Students can simply work together to match the cards with the same beginning sound and ending sound. Pairs Included: bag - bug, bat - boat, crab - cab, dog - dig, fan - fin, hat - hut, log - leg, mop - map, night - net, rug - rag, sock - snake, vine - van Skills Assessed: This activity assesses students' abilities at identifying and matching beginning and ending sounds in single syllable words. This is a Race to the Top PowerPoint Activity. This allows you to turn any worksheet into a game ! This is for any subject and any grade level. The goal of this game for students is to be the first to reach the top of the mountain. To do this, students must advance their team up the mountain by working sections of problems correctly. Once each team finishes a section of questions, they can check in with the teacher. If everyone is correct, that team will roll to find out which rule to play by. If incorrect, they will need to find and fix their mistakes before they check in again. Directions to Teacher Before Game : On “Race to the Top” slide, edit the box in top left corner to show the problems you want students to complete. The vertical gray bars in the textbook group problems into sections. Edit textboxes next to each rule to suit your preferences (or use the default rules). Edit “ Game Rules” slide to suit your preferences. Show this to students before starting the game . To Run the Game : Put PowerPoint in presentation mode. After a team finishes a section correctly, have them roll a dice to see which rule they get. Then follow the directions for that rule (if the rule involves a dice roll, have them roll again). To make a rule show up, click on the Rule textbox. Click on it again to make the rule disappear. Sometimes it’s advantageous for the teacher to select which Rule teams play by for a given amount of time (5-10 minutes). To speed the game up, use Rules 6. To slow the game down, use Rule 5. To catch last place teams up, use Rules 2 or 3. To advance a team up the mountain, click on their dots (starting at the bottom and working your way up). If you make a mistake and click too many dots, simply click the dot again and it will revert to white. Essentially, clicking once adds color; clicking on the same dot again removes the color. Help your child/ren to take their first steps in reading, writing and spelling, with this exciting structured scheme. How to prepare Cut out the dog‘s head, body and tail. Glue the head and body together and attach to a box (shoebox). Stick the tail to the other end of the box, so it can be seen just above the box. How to play: Muddle up and divide the bones equally between the number of children playing. Each child takes a turn to read a word from their pile. If they read the word correctly, everyone shouts “WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!” and the child slots it through the dogs mouth. However, if they read the word incorrectly, everyone shouts “Grrrr....” and the word bone has to go to the bottom of the child’s pile. The first child to feed all their bones to the dog is the winner.

Here is a fun, print 'n play phonic game for the split digraph a-e! Help your pupils to grasp the tricky split digraph concept as they play! Who is the a-e game suitable for? All learners of phonics, including young children, SEN/special needs, ESL etc... Aims and Objectives Some children, when starting to learn about the long /a-e/ sound will start to make every /a/ into a long /a-e/ sound. While this is common among all children, some children need more help to overcome this difficulty. Therefore, this game has two aims: 1.To help children to be able to hear the long vowel sound a-e in words 2.To help children understand that some words have a short /a/ and some have a long /a-e/; the child must listen to hear which word has which - not guess. How to play: This is a game for two players. The teacher should watch if two children are playing together. Each player takes a game board which will indicate whether the player should listen for words with a short /a/ sound or a long /a-e/ sound. The selected picture cards are scattered on the table face down. Players take it in turns to choose a picture card. The player says the word and listens to the vowel sound. Is it short /a/, or long /a-e/? If it belongs on the player’s board, it is placed on one of the oblongs. If not, it is returned to the table, face down. The winner is the player who completes his/her board first. Teaching tips: Support children to sound words out/blend them as needed. Help children to hear the vowel sound by emphasizing it and stretching it out. Help the child to do this as well. Have fun - as this eases children over those tricky spots! Short A: Riddle Time Sample Game Note: This download is in PowerPoint show mode to protect the rights of the image creator(s), and is thus UNEDITABLE. Playing the Game The question slide will begin with a clue and the amount of points available for guessing the correct word with this clue alone. Students can write/say their answers. Clicking the curved arrow on the right will make the next clue appear. This will have a lower points value but gives another clue for students to guess the word on. Again, press the curved arrow for the final clue. This is pretty much a a give away ie. you put this on your head, so students win at least five points on each round. Press the arrow for the answer. A pic will also appear but immediately become semi-transparent so you can still see the clues underneath if you wish to go through them. Press the square in the bottom right corner to go to the next page. Will be harder for early learners due to the amount of reading so you may have to read it out and help with some meanings. Words come up clearly so are easy to read, you may want to ask students to spell the word before revealing it. Teachers have complete control over the length of each slide as clues comes out one-by-one. How to make the game Print out pages 4 to 9, on card. Cut out the picture cards (pages 6 - 8). Cut up the ar/or cards (page 9). Write ‘ar’ on the back of one baseboard (pages 4/5) and ‘or’ on the back of the other. Write ‘ar’ or ‘or’ as appropriate on the backs of the picture cards. Find a bag or small box to put the small letter ar/or cards in. How to play the game This is a game for 2 players. It is best if an adult plays with each child individually first and then when each child in a pair is confident, they can play in together. The game can be played with the picture and word cards alone, without the ar/or cards - as a simple matching game. This is how it has been designed to be played: Take a baseboard each. This will decide who is collecting ‘ar’ pictures and ‘or’ pictures. Choose 6 ar and 6 or cards (you can choose different pictures each time you play). Scatter the picture cards picture side up. Take it in turns to take an ‘ar’/’or’ letter card from the bag/box. If the player with the ‘ar’ baseboards picks an ‘ar’ card, s/he may choose a picture with the ar sound in. Likewise with ‘or’. Players may only turn the picture card over to check that they are correct. If not, the picture card is replaced. The winner is the first to fill his/her card.
