Skateboarding Reading Comprehension Passage - Cored Ed Encyclopedia

Skateboarding Reading Comprehension Passage - Cored Ed Encyclopedia
ELA, Language Development, Reading Comprehension, Reading, Pre-Reading, Writing, Sports, P.E. & Health, Technology, Science, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Teacher Tools, Centers, Activities, Writing Prompts, Assessments, Quizzes and Tests, Quizzes, Lesson Plans

This skateboarding reading comprehension includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Students open their eyes, read the question aloud and give them a few minutes to complete. Ask a few students to share or keep answers until the end to compare with what they learn in the passage. Quick pause—thousands of Cored Education products are included with your TeachSimple membership. Download links and encyclopedia index available here. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. Do some, do none, do all, completely optional - but you will feel reassured knowing every possibility is planned for. Includes summary writting question. Answer Key There are answers for the multiple-choice questions, written response questions have sample answers, vocabulary answers and if there is a summary question then a sample summary will be provided as well. Lesson Plan Included Customized lesson plan for this lesson is included. Lesson Snapshot Title: Skateboarding Genre: Nonfiction (informational text) Subject: Social Studies (history/culture) / Physical Education (sports) Primary Topic: How skateboarding began and evolved Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): R What This Lesson Teaches Best How skateboarding started in California when surfers tried “sidewalk surfing” using boards and roller-skate wheels. How a problem (hard wheels and injury worries) led to a decline around 1966, and how a new solution helped the sport return. How new technology (polyurethane wheels that gripped and rolled smoothly) changed what riders could do and how safe it felt. How places to ride shaped new styles, from parks with banks/curves to pools, then street spots like curbs, stairs, and rails. How a timeline of key decades/years (1940s–50s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1995, Tokyo 2020/2021) shows the sport’s growth into major events. Learning Goals Describe why skateboarding began and what early riders used to make boards roll. Explain why skateboarding “nearly disappeared” around 1966 using details from the text. Identify how polyurethane wheels changed riding and why turns felt more controllable. Describe how skate parks and empty swimming pools helped create vertical skating and half-pipes. Explain how street-style skateboarding grew and name major events mentioned in the passage. Key Vocabulary From the Text polyurethane — a wheel material that grips and rolls smoothly. contests — competitions where people try to win. controllable — easy to control and not scary. vertical — going up steeply, like riding up walls. debut — first time something appears in an event. ELA, Literature, Reading, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, Activities, Projects

This is an engaging Book Jacket Book Report for your middle school students! This book report can be genre-specific or it can be assigned to any book your students might choose to read. (For example, if you assign a genre-specific book, such as mystery or fantasy, this book report lends itself. But if you allow kids to choose any genre they are interested in, this book report works for that as well.) You can use the Book Jacket Book Report as a summative assessment after you’ve taught students about character, the elements of fiction, and how to write a summary and a short book review. I give my students 4-5 weeks to complete the project. Included in this packet are the following: --objectives and learning targets that are aligned with the Common Core Standards --detailed lesson plans --clear student-friendly directions --templates --an opportunity for students to reflect on their project and what they have learned about themselves as readers and as creators of the project --a grading sheet for teachers. Although you could easily modify this project digitally, students enjoy reading each other's book jackets (which is part of the lesson plan), and they make a great bulletin board. Triangle Dice Game: Isosceles, Scalene, Equilateral, Right, Acute, Obtuse

Triangle Dice Game: Isosceles, Scalene, Equilateral, Right, Acute, Obtuse
Math, Geometry, Measurements, Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, Activities, Games

Here's a deceptively simple dice game to practice identifying and creating six kinds of triangles. Three are classified by their angles: acute, right, and obtuse. Three are classified by their side lengths: scalene, equilateral, and isosceles. Use this game to reinforce the definitions of each of these six triangles in a geometry/measurement unit. Students work independently or in small groups. Each player needs two dice. They roll them and use the two numbers as side lengths in centimetres for a triangle. They draw the triangle in one of the boxes on their paper and measure and label the third side length. Here's where the strategy and critical thinking come in. Can students make six kinds of triangles in less than six turns? Maybe! If they get some lucky rolls! For example, if a student gets a roll with two of the same numbers, they should make an isosceles or equilateral triangle (depending on what angles they draw). But this triangle will also be an acute triangle (or an isosceles right triangle). Clever students (with lucky rolls) should be able to complete the task in less than six turns. Standards: CCSS 4.G.A.2 Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles. CCSS 7.G.A.2 Draw (freehand, with ruler and protractor, and with technology) geometric shapes with given conditions. Focus on constructing triangles from three measures of angles or sides, noticing when the conditions determine a unique triangle, more than one triangle, or no triangle. Grades: This game works well in classes from grades 4-7. Ideally students know how to use a ruler and a protractor. If you enjoy this product, check out the other math games in my store Grace Under Pressure

Going on an Airplane Social Story

Going on an Airplane Social Story
Special Resources, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Social Skills, Special Education Needs (SEN), Not Grade Specific, Activities

Airplane travel can be an exciting adventure, but also filled with uncertainty for many children. For kids on the autism spectrum especially, the unfamiliar surroundings and procedures can heighten confusion and anxiety without proper preparation. This social story resource aims to walk children through air travel from start to finish in a detailed yet reassuring way. The story covers every phase, using simple language and visual supports. It explains what to expect when getting tickets, packing bags, and arriving at the airport. Going through security, waiting at the gate, boarding, and taking off are all described in concrete terms. While seated on the plane, appropriate behaviors are outlined along with various occupying activities for the flight like reading books, listening to music, or watching movies. finally, the story describes the sensations of descending and landing as well as exiting the plane and airport. Common emotions a child may experience throughout are validated and labeled, like feeling eager, nervous, bored, or impatient at different points. Suggestions for coping strategies are woven in, like asking for hugs, taking deep breaths, requesting snacks, or stretching. The consistency of the narrative and matter-of-fact tone provide stability children can hold onto. By naming specific sites, sounds, procedures and feelings to expect, uncertainty is diminished. Walking through the entire airport/airplane experience start to finish, this social story is an ideal method for preparing autistic children for airplane travel. It allows them to fully understand and participate in this immersive real-world activity that requires certain social-emotional skills - exactly what social stories are designed for. These books should be used over and over to reinforce the point so I would suggest either putting the pages into a display book or laminating and binding them. 28th Amendment Project

28th Amendment Project
Social Studies, History, History: USA, Government, Grade 8, 9, 10, 11, Activities, Projects

Without a doubt, history is a topic that can be easily overlooked by our students. Sometimes, it can be difficult for them to make connections with the past in a way that makes sense to them. Being able to provide students with meaningful resources is the best way to get over this learning curve. Whenever you have a social studies topic to introduce or review, you want to find engaging products that you know your students will be able to learn from. Within my store, you will find a plethora of social studies resources to utilize with your students. What You Get: This is a 28th Amendment Project. There are 10 slides in the presentation and 2 pages for the brainstorming chart, which is an editable Word document. This is an inquiry learning project that will challenge students to consider what amendment they would seek to have passed if a 28th amendment could be added. The presentation provides brief explanations and guides students through brainstorming. How To Implement This Resource: You should print off enough copies of the brainstorming chart for each student to have, so they can make notes on it as they follow along with the presentation. Encourage them to make notes on the back of the paper or on separate pieces of paper until they are sure about the amendment they think should be implemented. As you work through the presentation, you will be taking students through a brainstorming process about adding a 28th Amendment. Some things students will consider are: -- Issues that exist with how the Constitution works -- Social issues or financial issues within the country -- Which groups of people might oppose a certain amendment -- Finding reputable sources, without a motive, for their research These slides provide great opportunity for engagement and whole group discussion before students dive into their research. Allow students the opportunity to get creative and continue discussions throughout the research process. I hope you enjoy!
