Punctuation Pasta Project

This is a Punctuation Pasta Project for big kids! This project is focused on commas, parentheses, and dashes with a bonus quotation mark review included. I love room transformations; students are going to remember moments and therefore, the content associated with those moments much more easily. Create an Italian restaurant in your classroom with plastic tablecloths or red and white butcher paper. I bought glass candleholders & electric tealights at the dollar store that I repurpose for other room transformations. Italian music/photos on the board, a crockpot full of simmering tomato sauce & some breadsticks on the tables hit all the senses! Place a table tent and one punctuation card per pair of students on each table. You will also need a plate or bowl full of dried pasta. For this particular lesson, you will need spaghetti or fettuccini for the dashes, small elbow macaroni for commas & quotation marks, & large elbow macaroni for parentheses. Students simply place the pasta in the spots on the cards where the punctuation is missing. I do one activity at a time (have students complete with their partner and then go over answer key before distributing next card). Early finishers can work on pasta plate practice activity. This lesson was specifically designed for 6th grade, and the accompanying PowerPoint teaches L.6.2a, but the pasta punctuation cards can work with L.4.2a, and L.5.2a, as well. There is a companion slideshow that will provide rules, practice and examples!

Unions Simulation Teacher Guide Hello and thank you so much for purchasing my Unions Simulation! My students have really enjoyed this, and I have enjoyed seeing the concepts and familiar battle lines come to life. I hope your students enjoy it too! The lesson is designed to have a warm up, a goal statement, an agenda slide, a (very) brief overview of work conditions and famous strikes, then the instructions to the simulation, and then finally a quick exit ticket to cement major ideas. In general for the simulation, students are divided into one of three groups: bosses, strike-breakers, and union leadership. Each with their own desired outcome or goal. Begin by walking students through the warm-up, goal statement, agenda, and mini-lecture to refresh their minds on the era in question. To start the game , prompt the “Bosses” group to announce how much they plan to cut wages by. If needed, try to encourage the bosses to announce a pay cut in the range of $10-12/hour. This is a number that is acceptable to the replacement workers, but unacceptable to union leadership–starting conflict Next round, prompt replacement labor to negotiate with the bosses. Prompt the Union group to decide whether the pay cut is “acceptable” and if not, what actions could be taken. From there, let the simulation play out until it reaches an organic conclusion. My classes have ended a few different ways– the union getting arrested for threats of bombs, the unions accepting a pay cut to $13/hour, replacement labor being hired at $11/hour after several set-backs, etc. The key is students realizing the tenuous relationship between unions and their bosses, and union members and replacement labor. At the conclusion of the activity get students back in their designated seat, discuss the activity, and administer the exit ticket. These dragons are so silly and so much fun for kids to color. As is this entire dragon crafts activity pack. Kids absolutely love these dragons as well with their simple, thick outlines, they are a great way to give your students a break from their work and also be used as a reward for good behavior and an assignment done well. Since so many kids nowadays love dinosaurs and dragons, I thought it would be fun to create a dragon crafts activity pack. The simple drawings are perfect for preschoolers and prereaders. The bookmark designs, which are smaller and more complex, can be enjoyed by older students as well. There are five different dragons on 8.5 x 11 for a total of 10 posters - 5 of the dragons contain a colored example that children can follow to help with color recognition. These do not have a color border. The other 5 dinosaurs are black and white by themselves and contain a colored border. Once colored, the posters can be used to decorate bulletin boards, classrooms, and home refrigerators. They could even be framed and given as gifts! They can be printed and used again and again! In addition, there are 6 double-sided bookmarks with different geometric designs, patterns, and dragon pictures for coloring and printing. Geometry is math, so without realizing it, when your students color in the geometric designs, they are in essence practicing math skills. You can ask your students to identify the shapes and patterns on the bookmarks while they are coloring. You can also teach about shapes and patterns while they are keeping their hands busy coloring them. This can be super helpful in reducing distractibility. The geometric designs are great for developing familiarity with shapes and patterns. Plus, bookmarks make great gifts and encourage reading. The format is pdf downloadable and there are 15 pages, including the cover page. There is no need for an answer key as this dragon craft activity pack is pure fun with a little arts and crafts and math snuck in.
