French Revolution Three Estates – History Project

Students will identify the population share, power, and privileges of each of the Three Estates in pre-revolutionary France.

Students will explain why the estate system was considered unfair to the Third Estate.

Students will represent estate-specific facts visually or in writing across six related terms.

Students will interpret a political cartoon's symbolism to explain how it depicts the estate system's power imbalance.

Follow the file's own 'Notes to the Teacher' sequencing: use pages 1-2 to review the estate composition with students, project pages 3-4 while going over it, then hand out pages 5-6 for students to fill in during the same lesson.

Save the cartoon-drawing activity and the political-cartoon analysis for day two, as the file's own notes suggest, using the political cartoon as an opening activity.

Remind students that stick figures are not allowed in the cartoon-drawing boxes — they must either draw a fuller picture or write three facts instead, per the activity's own instructions.

Use the standalone student copies for printing and distribution, and keep the combined teacher file for lecture notes and answer keys.

Historical data interpretation — students read and record population, power, and privilege facts for each of the Three Estates from a structured chart.

Cause-and-effect reasoning — students explain why the estate system's tax burden made it unfair to the Third Estate.
