So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like complex sentence, independent clause, dependent clause, subordinate conjunction, because, although, since, if, when, while, unless, until, after, before, and even though. The kids could name a few African countries but had no idea what words like Adinkra, djembé, or kente meant when we started learning about the rich and diverse cultures of Africa. I wanted to introduce them to a few key ideas like oral tradition, symbolic art, and the importance of community without making it feel like a lecture . So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like Africa , culture , tradition , oral history , griot (storyteller), kente (traditional cloth), djembé (drum), Sahara (desert), Nile (river), savanna , and community . For the culture terms, I drew on resources that highlighted concepts like Ubuntu (the idea of interconnectedness) and practices like scarification and ceremonial objects like the nkisi power figure and the Oba (king of Benin), although I kept it simple for this age group . I also pulled a few Swahili words like Jambo (hello) and Kwaheri (goodbye) because they're fun for the kids to learn .
