African Culture Vocabulary word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this African culture vocabulary puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our social studies and cultural unit. The kids could name a few African countries but had no idea what words like Adinkra, djembé, or kente meant when we started learning about the rich and diverse cultures of Africa. I wanted to introduce them to a few key ideas like oral tradition, symbolic art, and the importance of community without making it feel like a lecture .

So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like Africa, culture, tradition, oral history, griot (storyteller), kente (traditional cloth), djembé (drum), Sahara (desert), Nile (river), savanna, and community. For the culture terms, I drew on resources that highlighted concepts like Ubuntu (the idea of interconnectedness) and practices like scarification and ceremonial objects like the nkisi power figure and the Oba (king of Benin), although I kept it simple for this age group . I also pulled a few Swahili words like Jambo (hello) and Kwaheri (goodbye) because they're fun for the kids to learn . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the cultural and geographical vocabulary finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether the Nile is the longest river in the world. The crossword I use for partners or as a review . I added a couple simple djembe and kente pattern drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers draw their own Adinkra symbol or write one thing they learned about a country in Africa on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
