About This Product
Learn to Read: Book 2 Complete Collection, 19 Decodable Stories
Book 2 of the Reading Made Simple programme brings nineteen stories together in one volume that is easy to print and keep in a folder. It picks up where Book 1 leaves off, so Book A, Book B and Book 1 need to be read first.
Ten sound patterns are covered across the stories: a_e, i_e, o_e, u_e, ai, ea, oa, igh, ay and ir. Each story begins with a word practice list, with words grouped by pattern, so the reader can warm up on the sounds before meeting them in the text.
A few sight words are introduced gently and marked as odd words in the lists.
These are not word-stuff decodables. They are real little stories, set on a farm and illustrated in soft watercolours, with the vocabulary tightly controlled. New words arrive a few at a time, and the words already learned keep returning in later stories, so the child meets them again and again until they become automatic.
The pictures are there to be enjoyed, not used for guessing. The aim is natural-sounding stories rather than drill, with every word something the child can sound out.
Each story is short enough to finish in one sitting. Before reading, go through the word list together. While reading, encourage sounding out rather than guessing, and when the story is finished, make a fuss of it. If progress stalls, do a little more work on the sound that is causing trouble.
Book 2 suits children who can already blend CVC and CCVC/CVCC words, and older learners who need to go more slowly. It works well for parents at home, home educators, small groups and one-to-one teaching.
