National Arbor Day Word Scramble Worksheet
I made this word scramble for my 3rd grade class when we celebrated Arbor Day last April. It's a simple 2-page activity with 24 tree-related words that get kids excited about planting and caring for trees. You'll find basic terms like "leaf" and "acorn" mixed up with more challenging words like "sapling" and "arboretum."
When we used this during our tree-planting unit, I was surprised how quickly the kids got into it. They loved racing to unscramble "photosynthesis" while eating their snacks under our classroom maple tree. The worksheet includes practical words we actually use when studying trees - "bark," "canopy," even "mulch" for those doing garden projects.
This works great for:
Arbor Day celebrations
Earth Week activities
Science units on forests
Outdoor education prep
The first page has all scrambled words in an easy-to-read format. The second page is just the answers - perfect when you need to check work during a busy school day. My students like working in pairs to solve the tougher words together.
I printed ours on recycled paper last year to match our "save the trees" theme. The kids especially liked figuring out "compost" right before we started our classroom compost bin.
Sample words:
root (easy)
deciduous (medium)
reforestation (challenge)
Format: PDF (2 pages - activity + answers)
Teacher tip: Have students draw their favorite tree next to three words they unscramble!
