Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Identify the word that has the same or nearly the same meaning as a given word.

  • Choose the correct synonym for a bolded word presented in isolation or within a sentence.

  • Distinguish a true synonym from a plausible-sounding but incorrect option, including 'NOT a synonym' questions.

Teaching tips

  • Work through the examples sheet as a class before assigning the worksheets, since it walks through five sample synonym pairs with reasoning.

  • Point out the 'NOT a synonym' question style before students encounter it, since it reverses the usual question pattern and can otherwise be answered on autopilot.

  • Assign the four worksheets across separate sessions, since each is a full 25-question set covering the same skill with new vocabulary.

Skills covered

  • Synonym identification โ€” students choose the word with the same or nearly the same meaning as a bolded target word, such as marvelous or robust.

  • Context-based vocabulary reasoning โ€” later questions require reading a full sentence, like "The man in the store was very impolite to the staff," to determine the synonym in context.

  • Distractor elimination โ€” students rule out near-miss answer choices, including explicit 'NOT a synonym' items that reverse the usual question pattern.

Good to know

Questions teachers ask about this resource

Do the worksheets only test single words, or also words in context?

Both โ€” early items pair a bolded word with three choices, while later items embed the target word in a full sentence, such as identifying the synonym for "chatty" in "Pam is very chatty and makes me laugh."
