Helping Students Reflect with Therapy Dogs 🐶💭 There’s something special about the presence of a therapy dog in the classroom. Even the most restless students seem to relax. Some kids who rarely speak up suddenly open up. And for many, it’s the first time they’ve had a chance to experience the unconditional support that a dog offers. But what if we took that experience and turned it into a learning moment? That’s exactly what this reflection activity does. It helps students think about what kindness means, why responsibility matters, and how their actions affect others—whether those others have two legs or four. Why This Activity Feels Different ✔ It gets students thinking, not just answering. It’s not about memorizing facts. It’s about pausing for a moment and reflecting on simple but meaningful questions. ✔ It connects emotions with actions. Why do therapy dogs have rules? Why does kindness matter? These questions lead to unexpectedly deep discussions. ✔ It’s easy for any grade level. Younger kids can draw their answers, while older students might write or discuss. No one feels left out. ✔ It works with or without a therapy dog. Even if your school doesn’t have one, this still sparks conversations about empathy and responsibility. ✔ No prep required. Just print it out, hand it to students, and let them think. How I Use It in My Classroom 📌 First, we talk. I ask, “How do animals teach us about kindness?” or “What do therapy dogs need from us?” The answers are never what I expect—and that’s the best part. 📌 Then, students reflect. They complete a few simple but thoughtful prompts about their own behavior, their emotions, and what they’ve learned. 📌 Next, we share (if they want to). I never make sharing mandatory. But I’m always surprised by how many students want to. 📌 Finally, we put up the poster. It’s a small reminder that kindness and responsibility go beyond the classroom. 🐶 One more idea: If you have a therapy dog visit your class, have students read their reflections to the dog. You’d be amazed at how much more open and engaged they become! Book into Movie Project: Compare and Contrast Book Report and Essay

Many students don’t realize that some or many of the movies that they love were first books. They are often surprised to find out that the movie came second or that there's even a book the movie is based on. In the 47-page Common Core standards-aligned resource, Book into Movie Project: Compare and Contrast Book Report, and Essay students in 6th-9th grade will read a book, watch the movie that is based on or adapted from the book, and then write a book review in which they take a stand on which is better and why. The comprehensive lesson plan and guide provides teachers with everything they need to give 6th through 12th grade students the tools to critically analyze the similarities and differences between the two, including helping them to support their claim with evidence and analysis. Because the project offers many handouts, a sample student essay to analyze, and a writing template, your diverse student population of English Language Learners and Resource Students can be as successful as your regular ed and GATE students. After completing this project, many students will realize that although they liked the movie, they preferred the book for a variety of reasons, including visualizing the characters and settings themselves and explaining why that made the book better. They will notice that they didn’t like how the movie adaptors changed aspects of the plots or characters, and they offer an analysis of these omissions and their impact on the storyline. They will react positively when the movie includes something they really liked or when what they visualized matches up with the adaptation. Some will prefer the movie over the book, and they will be able to articulate why. Overall, students have told me that this is one of their favorite book projects. Arctic Survival – Team Building Activity

Without a doubt, history is a topic that can be easily overlooked by our students. Sometimes, it can be difficult for them to make connections with the past in a way that makes sense to them. Being able to provide students with meaningful resources is the best way to get over this learning curve. Whenever you have a social studies topic to introduce or review, you want to find engaging products that you know your students will be able to learn from. Within my store, you will find a plethora of social studies resources to utilize with your students. What You Get: This is an Artic Survival Team Building Activity. There are 13 slides in the presentation . There is a Survival Score Sheet as well as an Answer Key + Teacher Guide. All 3 products are editable and can be accessed digitally. How To Implement This Resource: This is a team building activity that will have students ponder what kind of process makes for “good decision making.” Students will begin by being presented with the following scenario: “Your plane has crash landed in Northern Canada at night. The crash has killed the pilot and co-pilot. You and the others have discovered 12 items in the wreckage. You will be asked to rank the importance of these 12 items to your survival. Then, your group and you will rank them together.” As the teacher, you can decide on how large or small you want the groups to be. When all students have finished their individual ranking, allow them to come together with their group and propose new rankings. This will require students to talk to one another and listen to other reasonings. When students have finished their group rankings, they will have the opportunity to reflect with 4 questions. Students may find that humans make better decisions when they are able to consider diverse experiences. The Answer Key provides a ranking and rationale that was composed by former instructor in survival training. Students will be able to use this answer key to notate the Expert Score on their Survival Score Sheet. I hope you enjoy!

STEM Project: Climate Change Solutions with Assessment Rubric is designed for middle school students from Grades 6 to 9. It's a real-world resource designed to deepen student understanding of climate change and stimulate critical thinking skills while brainstorming and researching viable solutions based on current and future technologies. This resource can be used in subjects such as Science, Environmental Science, Technology, Engineering and Earth Sciences classes. The hands-on approach in this project fosters active participation among students. They'll start by learning about the root cause of climate change and carbon cycles through online resources before proceeding towards a brainstorming session in order to think of solutions that could help rebalance our planet's atmospheric CO2 levels. Their ideas for technologies or inventions can fall into several categories like reducing greenhouse gases produced by human activities; enhancing photosynthesis to absorb more CO2; reflecting the sun's rays away from Earth; storing excess carbon emissions; or using chemistry principles to transform surplus CO2 into other forms. After choosing their solution concept within their groups or pairs, students delve deep into researching their unique idea. They will attempt to explain how their idea works, what materials are needed, and the optimal locations of implementation. For presentation purposes, students have creative control over whether to choose a poster layout or digital methods like PowerPoint slideshows and video compilations. To help keep things organized throughout the project, there’s an inclusive graphic organizer for note-taking. Additionally, an assessment rubric is provided for grading purposes and to guide the students throughout.
