This Icebergs reading comprehension with lesson plan includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Students open their eyes, read the question aloud and give them a few minutes to complete. Ask a few students to share or keep answers until the end to compare with what they learn in the passage. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. This ready-to-go set of 5 stations will supplement a unit about factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers. Math stations or centers are a great way to get students engaged as they move about the room and work collaboratively with their peers. Even when students are in middle school or the intermediate grades, they benefit from a variety of teaching strategies including the use of stations or centres! But they are a lot of work to prepare! Let me do the work for you! Station 1: Students solve 4 riddles/word problems involving factors and multiples. (optional: set out white boards for students to use) Station 2: Students play a game using 10-sided dice. (supplies needed: pairs of dice) Station 3: Students choose two numbers to investigate and learn about common factors and multiples. (optional: set out an anchor chart about factors vs multiples) Station 4: Students review prime and composite numbers and make prime factor trees. (optional: set out laptops or tablets for the online game extension) Station 5: Students apply what they have learned to a real-life problem, and practice writing and drawing about their mathematical thinking. (optional: set out counters for students to use) Ways to Use: You can break your class into 5 groups and have them rotate one at a time through the centres, giving them 10-20 minutes at each one. Or, start students at certain centres and then allow them to move around at their own pace as long as no one centre gets too full. I find these are a great resource as you are finishing your unit and preparing for the unit test. Grades to Use With: These stations work well in grades 4-7 classes or high school special education. Standards: CCSS4.OA.B.4 Find all factor pairs for a whole number in the range 1-100. Recognize that a whole number is a multiple of each of its factors. Determine whether a given whole number in the range 1-100 is a multiple of a given one-digit number. Determine whether a given whole number in the range 1-100 is prime or composite. CCSS6.NS.B.4 Find the greatest common factor of two whole numbers less than or equal to 100 and the least common multiple of two whole numbers less than or equal to 12. Use the distributive property to express a sum of two whole numbers 1–100 with a common factor as a multiple of a sum of two whole numbers with no common factor. For example, express 36 + 8 as 4 (9 + 2). This middle school science lesson introduces the essential needs that humans (astronauts) must meet in order to survive while exploring in the extreme environment of outer space: •Oxygen •Water •Food •Waste Removal •Temperature •Light •Pressure How to Use: One need (oxygen) is comprehensively explained as an example to show your students. You can assign the other six needs as you see fit: Students can research one or two individually or in small groups and share the information with the class (a jigsaw activity), or they can complete the whole assignment independently. This is also a great way to help your students practice using focused search terms on the internet. You can do a quick mini-lesson on an interactive whiteboard, showing them how you would search for one of the items before letting them use technology to do research themselves. Student Instructions: Humans have several needs that must be met to survive in any extreme environment on Earth or in space. We need to have oxygen to breathe, water to drink, food to eat, a way to store or remove waste, a certain temperature to keep our body safe, some light (but protection from too much direct sunlight), and the correct pressure so our organs don’t collapse or explode. We use different kinds of technology to meet all of these needs in space. You will research how humans survive in space. Find specific answers, draw diagrams , and be ready to share what you have learned with your classmates. The first need is completed for you below. Transportation Prewriting Tracing Lines

These transportation themed prewriting tracing card activity gives students ample practice with handwriting by having them trace a wide variety of lines, including straight lines, zig zags, curves, and loops. These tracing lines will help guide students to learn to write from left to right to mimic how students will eventually learn to write words and sentences. There are two sets of cards in this product: One set has a colorful boarder that you can be printed on white paper. The bright colors of this set will keep students engaged with tracing. One set has a white border. The less busy background is perfect for students who may become distracted by the extra patterns and colors. Ways to Use Writing or Fine Motor Center - Place these cards in a writing or fine motor center for students to practice tracing the lines or placing manipulates onto the lines. Write and Wipe Activity - Laminate the cards to create a write and wipe activity. Morning Tubs or Baskets - Place the cards in a morning tub for students to complete as their classmates arrive to class. Small Group Activity - The teacher can pull aside students who need extra writing practice to complete these cards. There are several ways you can prepare these cards. You can create a fine motor center by adding small manipulatives to lay on top of the lines. By adding tongs, the teacher can add more fine motor practice. You can laminate the cards and create a write and wipe activity using dry erase markers. A third way to use these cards is to add cotton swabs and paint for students to place dots on the lines. Be sure to instruct students to start at the left and move to the right, directing them to guide the car to the house. These transportation themed prewriting cards are a low prep activity for teachers to prepare for students. There are two options for creating these cards. One is to cut them apart and have students complete in one of the ways listed above. The other is to leave the sheet whole and simply laminate. The cards can easily be stored in a pencil box so that this activity is easy to set up, clean up and store.
