It's super helpful to all admin and office staff to have one of these filled out for each teacher! As a coach, I had each teacher fill out this survey form at the beginning of the year and it came in handy around holidays and especially around Teacher appreciation / staff appreciation time because I could easily copy and send this home with families! The Tree Blossom Craft is a fun resource for young children to complete; as part of science about trees/plants, to welcome spring, or simply to put into practice their fine motor skills! Ways to use the Tree Blossom Craft Activity: It can be used for art class, or for the study of trees/spring. It is best if the children's attention has been drawn to trees in blossom first as then the activity will be more meaningful to them. Work could then extend to the work of insects/ bees to pollinate the flowers - and then intrigue fostered to find out what happens next. A tree could then be studied and visited again to see the fruits appearing. The study of nature is the beginning of the study of science. A good teacher will take full advantage of every opportunity to guide her/his pupils to learn from it. Full Instructions for making a Tree in Blossom are provided The activity only needs simple resources, and it would be good if the children could help to gather twigs - or the teacher could bring them into class. You will need: Brown card Green Card Scissors Twigs Tissue paper: Pink, white and green PVA glue This activity is suitable for Grade K (Y1) and upwards. It is suitable for class/group or home education. Younger children could complete it with help. A total of 7 easy steps are included in the instructions. This activity is best implemented in small groups where the teacher, assistant, or parent is readily available to step in and help students. Older students may be able to work independently. During completion: name the parts of the tree such as trunk, branches, twigs, blossom/flowers. An IR Phonic reading book with matching PowerPoints and 27 worksheets to support learning. This book is part of an incremental phonics reading scheme with a difference. Introducing just 10 words in each phonics family, the words are repeated from book to book, giving even those with very poor word recall the chance to learn to read fluently without having to decode every word. Ideal for dyslexics, or those suspected of being dyslexic and all children with a special need. You can view the first CK pack with a set of 30+ supporting activities and games FREE here. The books cover these sounds and must be taught in this order: CK; OO; SH; CH; ND/NT; NK; TH; NG; AR; A_E, I_E, O_E, U_E, AI, EA, OA, IGH, IR Rationale: It has long been proven that teaching children to decode is a powerful tool for teaching reading, as opposed to the Look and Say method. However, this has led to a proliferation of reading books that throw as many words with a shared phonics sound into a book as possible, not realising that some children with very poor word recall find it hard to recognise words when they see them again without much repetition. To combat this problem, while we recognise that, technically, once a child has been taught a new sound s/he can sound out many words with that new sound, when it comes to reading fluently, a child needs a core set of words in each family that they can recognise, which can act as a launch pad as they gain confidence. These books have been designed accordingly. For each sound family, just 10 words are studied with the help of the workbooks and are then repeated throughout the books, each book building on the vocabulary that has already been learned, repeating it and including it in new phrases as new sounds are learned. As the programme progresses, new sounds from the learned families are incorporated to widen vocabulary, while taking care to maintain fluency. The books are designed to limit guessing (though most children will try and guess, which must be avoided at all costs). Introduces most high-frequency words in the phonics family to which they belong, and gradually introduces genuine, non-decodable sight words into the text without causing overload or throwing the child off course. This universe reading comprehension with lesson plan includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Students open their eyes, read the question aloud and give them a few minutes to complete. Ask a few students to share or keep answers until the end to compare with what they learn in the passage. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. Do some, do none, do all, completely optional - but you will feel reassured knowing every possibility is planned for. Includes summary writting question. This is a pack of 8 AR spelling puzzles. How do the AR spelling puzzles help with phonics? Some children have difficulty understanding that two letters can make one sound. As the letters AR are on one part of the picture card - together - the physical manipulation of one piece of the puzzle, with two letters and one sound helps the child to understand. Who are they for? Any child needing help to hear the letters AR as one sound in words. They can be used in the Early Years (Pre-K and K) or for Early intervention, or for Special Needs. Instructions (included in the download): Puzzle Type 1: Cut around the whole of each mini puzzle (4 per page) and then cut each picture into its divisions. To play: ·The child chooses any card. S/he must the find the remaining part/s of the picture to fit together to complete each word. ·As the child does this the teacher should draw the child’s attention to the letters on each card. Ask questions such as: ‘What does ‘farm’ begin with? ‘So ‘f’ comes first’. ‘What sound can you hear next? f-ar?’ ‘Can you find the piece with ‘ar’?’ ‘What sound does ‘farm’ end with?’ ‘Can you find the last piece with ‘m’?’ ·Once each picture is formed, the child should then sound out the word, moving each piece to the right as it is sounded. Emphasise the saying of one sound ‘ar’ for the letters ‘ar’ together. Puzzle Type 2: These puzzles should be completed after Puzzle Type 1. They consolidate learning. Cut each picture puzzle out. Cut out the separate letter cards. To Play: The child chooses a picture. The child sounds out the word: s-t-ar; c-ar; f-ar-m; sh-ar-k; b-ar-n; d-ar-t; c-ar-d; ar-m; c-ar-t; p-ar-k. The child then finds the letter cards needed to spell each word, placing them in the boxes under each card. Ask questions as the child works as for Puzzle Type 1.
