About This Product
Learn to Read: CCVC and CVCC Decodable Stories, Level 0 Book 2
Once a child can blend simple CVC words, the next step is words with two consonants side by side, like frog, stop, hand and lamp. This book gives children that step in ten carefully controlled stories, all in one 72-page A4 volume.
It follows on from the Reading Made Simple CVC course, so children should already be blending short vowel words comfortably before starting. The order of the programme runs from CVC, to CCVC and CVCC, and then on to Level 1: Book 1. If your child is already working through another systematic phonics programme, this book can sit alongside it, provided they have the CVC and blending knowledge it needs.
Each story starts with a word practice list. Before reading, the child works through the words they are about to meet, so they go into the story ready to succeed. New words arrive gradually, and the ones already learned keep returning in later stories. That repetition is what builds fluency: children blend a word, recognise it the next time, and soon read it without effort. Every story is fully decodable using the phonics taught so far. The only extras are nine high-frequency words, introduced within the sequence: a, the, is, of, and, I, go, no and to.
I have kept the layout easy on young eyes, with large, clear text and plenty of space between lines so a child can track along with a finger. The watercolour illustrations add enjoyment without inviting guessing from the pictures.
