Learning objectives

Cite text evidence to answer literature and informational-text questions using the RACE rubric structure.
Distinguish fables, folktales, and myths by their defining features and examples.
Identify common text structures (sequence, compare/contrast, cause/effect, problem/solution) and their signal words.

Teaching tips

Print and laminate the small posters if you want to reuse the charts across school years.
Have students glue the black-and-white mini posters into interactive notebooks as a personal reference copy of each classroom chart.
Introduce the RACE rubric chart early in the year, since several of the other charts assume students already cite text evidence in their answers.
Use the linked Google Slides deck if you prefer to build or display the charts digitally instead of printing.

Skills covered

Citing text evidence — the RACE rubric chart walks students through restating, answering, citing, and ending an answer with textual support.
Genre comparison — the fables/folktales/myths chart has students compare and contrast the three genres' features and examples.
Text-structure recognition — the text-structures glossary pairs five structures with their signal words and a matching graphic organizer.
Text-feature navigation — the text-features glossary defines index, glossary, captions, headings, diagrams, and maps for locating information in informational text.

Questions teachers ask about this resource

Do the charts come pre-made, or do I build them with my students?

You print and cut out the captions, then build each chart on paper together with your class — the small posters and mini posters serve as references, not a substitute for the collaborative build.

Are the Literature and Informational Text charts organized the same way?

Mostly — each RL and RI standard gets its own chart plus a matching fill-in version, and one chart doubles up to cover both RI.3.5 and RI.3.7 together since they share the same text-features skill.
