One black and white phonics anchor chart, which can be coloured by pupils What do the worksheets involve? The act of colouring helps the family of 'ai' words to be fixed together as a group of words in the child's memory. Teaching Prefixes and Suffixes for Reading Longer Words This practical teaching guide shows parents and tutors exactly how to help children decode multisyllabic words using prefixes and suffixes.. Learning to read longer words doesn't have to mean memorising a rulebook. In fact, the more rules you throw at a struggling reader, the more likely they are to freeze. What children need is a simple, reliable decoding strategy they can use every time they meet an unknown multisyllabic word. That's exactly what Beginnings and Endings gives them. This short, practical guide teaches children to chunk longer words by finding the vowel sounds and building chunks around them. Pupils are taught to take each vowel sound and add the consonants next to it, before and/or after — keeping any blends or double letters that belong together. Example: important: we keep OR together → im–por–tant, or imp–or–tant, or im–port–ant. There’s no wrong answer here — the goal is the whole word, not a perfect split. To help them with this process, we teach them common prefixes and suffixes: spotting familiar prefixes and suffixes and using them as stepping stones into the rest of the word. No complicated syllable-splitting rules. No jargon. Just a clear phonics-based method that works — and that children can apply independently once they've seen it modelled a few times. We call them beginnings and endings as the words 'prefix' and 'suffix' are meaningless at first to a child and can put an extra hurdle in the way of success. The guide covers the most useful prefixes — be, de, re, pre and un — alongside a solid set of suffixes: -ful, -less, -ness, -ly, -er and -ment . Each section moves from two-syllable words up to longer ones, so you can start where your child is confident and build from there. There's also a step-by-step worked example showing exactly how to talk a child through the decoding process — because children need to see the thinking, not just be told to "break it into syllables" and left to figure out what that means. This is the Reading Made Simple approach to decoding longer words, and I use it with struggling readers of all ages — from young children just moving beyond single-syllable words to older students who've been stuck for years. The moment a child realises they can tackle a word like reorganise by pulling it apart into manageable chunks is the moment longer words stop being a mystery.

Here’s a quick way to include real-world math , finding the difference (subtraction), and number lines in your daily calendar routine each morning in kindergarten, 1st grade, or 2nd grade! Have your students record the day's high and the day's low temperature in your city on this large thermometer. Then you can find the difference : which is the daily temperature range! INCLUDES METRIC (℃) & IMPERIAL (℉) How to Use this Calendar Routine: • Note: This product is created to be printed on large 11x17 paper! • Print a large thermometer (with your preferred units C or F) in colour. • Laminate the thermometer. • Then hang it up as part of your morning calendar routine. • Each day, you will look up the day's high and the day's low temperature in your city. • With your students, record the date, the high temperature, and the low temperature on the laminated chart using a whiteboard marker. • Have one or two students come up to circle the high & low temperature on the thermometer. • Then students can help you calculate the difference between these two temperatures to determine the daily temperature range. One brightly coloured ' ea ' phonic anchor chart which can be used as a word wall, or for teacher use One black and white phonics anchor chart, which can be coloured by pupils What do the worksheets involve? The colour ' ea ' anchor chart can be used as a word wall or as an aid to teaching the ' ea ' digraph. The black and white anchor chart can be coloured by the pupil. The act of colouring helps the family of ' ea ' words to be fixed together as a group of words in the child's memory. In addition, children can be encouraged to think of a story, using as many words on the ' ea ' anchor chart as possible. Theme Anchor Chart – Common Themes in Literature

Teaching theme can go from basic principles to more in depth meaning requiring students to inference and make connections. This resource gives you the ability to level up your theme teaching by starting students off on a beginner level. First, introduce theme possibilities to them with the worksheet in this resource. Then go through the explanation of each theme and ask them to find proof in their text to support one of the themes on the list. As students begin to read more difficult texts, you can ask for multiple themes or level up to intermediate (also included in this resource) and dive deeper into the meaning of each theme. By teaching theme, students will understand the bigger picture within literature. It even helps them understand author's purpose and make deeper "test-to-self" or "text-to-world" connections. Theme can also be powerful for full class lessons. Consider choosing a theme that your students need to learn, for example: INTEGRITY. Teach students that having integrity means to do the right thing even when no one is watching. Read them stories to prove why integrity is important and ask them to find text evidence to prove that the main character has integrity. This strategy can be used for all the themes included in this resource. Have fun teaching about theme!
