Aboriginal Culture word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this Aboriginal culture puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our social studies unit on Australia's First Peoples. The kids could name a few things like kangaroos and boomerangs, but they had no idea about the depth of Aboriginal cultures, which are the oldest continuous cultures on the planet, stretching back at least 65,000 years . They kept asking questions like "what's a didgeridoo?" or "why do they do dot paintings?" so I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like Dreamtime, totem, didgeridoo, boomerang, woomera, corroboree, ochre, kinship, elders, Country, and bark painting . I also threw in a few like "billabong" and "coolamon" because they came up in the picture books we were reading .

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about what a woomera is (it's a spear thrower, not a dance) or whether a didgeridoo is just a hollow log . The crossword I use for partners or as a review after we've looked at photos of rock art, didgeridoos, and ceremonial practices. I added a couple simple boomerang and dot painting drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one word from the puzzles and draw a picture or write a sentence about what it means on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
