Anthropology Terms word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this anthropology puzzle set for my 4th graders during our social studies unit. The kids had heard the word "anthropology" but had no idea what it actually meant or what anthropologists do. They kept asking questions like "So... do they dig up bones? Study languages? Both?" So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using basic terms like culture, evolution, genetics, hominid, artifact, primate, kinship, ethnography, and ritual . I also made sure to include the four main subfields—**cultural anthropology, archaeology, linguistic anthropology, and biological anthropology**—because that's the clearest way I've found to show them what the discipline actually covers .

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess, and the scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "archaeology" or whether a "hominid" is the same as a "human" (it's a broader category that includes our ancestors, not just us—the kids always have opinions about it). The crossword I use for partners or as a review after a lesson, and I usually have a few pictures of fossils, archaeological sites, and diverse cultures nearby for the kids who need the visual support to connect the words to the concepts. I added a couple simple fossil, dig site, and language symbol drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 4th through 6th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one term from the puzzle and write a sentence about what it means in their own words on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
