Art and Design Careers word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this art and design careers puzzle set for my 4th graders during our career exploration and arts unit. The kids could name a few art jobs like painter and sculptor, but they had no idea about the incredible range of design careers—from graphic design to fashion to video game art—or what words like portfolio, commission, or typography meant. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like graphic designer, illustrator, photographer, animator, fashion designer, interior designer, architect, video game designer, and art director . I also made sure to include "portfolio," "commission," "typography," and "visual storytelling" because they came up in our conversations about how artists actually work.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether a video game designer is more of a "designer" or an "artist" (I tell them it's both, and the kids have very strong opinions about it). The crossword I use for partners or as a review after we've watched short career videos. I added a couple simple paintbrush, camera, and compass-and-ruler drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 4th through 6th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one art career from the puzzles and write what they do on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
