Back to School Block Building Challenge Cards | Preschool STEM Center

Turn your block area into a busy little construction site this back to school season. These Block Building Challenge Cards invite young builders to look closely at a real block model and recreate a familiar school object with classroom blocks. Each half-page card asks a simple question, such as "Can you build a school bus?" or "Can you build a backpack?", and shows a bright photo of a finished block build so children know exactly what they are aiming for.

Along the bottom of every card, a picture vocabulary strip names the parts of the build, like wheels, windows and a stop sign, or a pocket, a zipper and a strap. Children match each part to the blocks in their own build, which builds school words and oral language while they play. As they copy, compare and adjust their creations, they practice spatial reasoning, problem solving, early engineering, visual discrimination and fine motor control.

The set also includes a colorful "Build Our School" display: big bubble letters, a "What will YOU build today?" headline, and cheerful school bus, backpack, crayon, apple, cloud and star cutouts. Hang it above your block center or on a classroom door to welcome families at open house and meet the teacher night.

To prep, print the cards on cardstock, cut them in half and laminate them for years of use. Keep them on a ring, in a pocket chart or in a basket near the blocks. Invite older builders to sketch their creation, count the blocks they used, or design a brand-new school object of their own.
